What is Relay???

• The American Cancer Societys signature
  fundraiser that offers communities an opportunity
  to join in the fight against cancer
• A chance to grieve for those lost to cancer and
  to celebrate those who have survived
• Empowering individuals to fight back against a
  disease that has taken so much from them.

How it all started

• In May 1985, Dr. Gordy Klatt, a colorectal
  surgeon took the first step of his 24-hour run
  around a track in Tacoma, WA.
• The following year, 220 supporters on 19 teams
  joined Dr. Klatt in the overnight event and the
  American Cancer Society Relay for Life was born.
• The Relay was an overnight event to symbolize
  that cancer never sleeps
• And it grew from there

What it has become

• From 1985-2005, Relay has spread to more than
  4,200 communities in the United States and to 12
  foreign countries.
• In 2005, 275 colleges hosted Relay and raised
  more than 11.75 million dollars!

Why Should We Help to Fight Cancer?

• In recent surveys cancer was the number 2 cause
  of death in the United States
• Almost half a million people die from cancer each
  year.
• Every 24 seconds a person is diagnosed with
  cancer with an average of one in three being
  diagnosed with cancer within their lifetime.

Life represents the hope that those lost to
cancer will never be forgotten, that those who
face cancer will be supported, and that one day
cancer will be eliminated.

ACS Goals for the Future

• ACS has set forth ambitious goals for the year
  2015 that will lead the Society in its mission to
  eradicate cancer as a major health problem
• The goals are the following
• Reduce cancer incidence rates by 25
• Reduce cancer mortality rates by 50
• Dramatically increase the quality of life for
  cancer survivors

Whats been done

• More than 2.5 billion dollars invested in cancer
  research since 1946.
• The ACS spends approximately 130 million each
  year on cancer research.
• A larger percentage of people than ever are
  surviving cancer due to advances in prevention,
  early detection and treatment.

ACS Cancer Research Breakthroughs

• Discovered combination chemotherapy as a
  successful treatment for childhood leukemia
• Created the Pap test to detect cervical cancer,
  reducing deaths from the disease by 70 percent
• Proved mammography is an effective screening tool
  for breast cancer and improved surgery methods
• Discovered the prostate-specific antigen (PSA)
  test for prostate cancer screening
• Identified smoking as a cause of lung cancer
• Discovered cancer-causing oncogenes and tumor
  suppressor genes
• Identified the genes for inherited breast and
  colon cancer

How to Get Started

• Get your information (e-mail, name, phone, etc.)
  down on a sign-up sheet
• Or Contact Us at UKRelay_at_Yahoo.com
• Visit the Website at www.uky.edu/studentorgs/ukrel

• Get a Relay info sheet so you have everything
  printed that you will need
• Form a team of your friends, co-workers, club
  members, whatever, or let us know and we will
  place you on a team.

Team Captain Responsibilities

• Getting a Team Captain Packet
• Getting a team together and distributing them
  packets
• Registering your team online when it becomes
  available and collecting registration money
• Coming to Team Captains Meetings once or twice a
  month to hear about Relay updates for your team
  and to receive your team captains rewards
• Getting your teams t-shirt sizes
• Gathering everyones money a few days before
  Relay to turn in at Bank Night

Team Member Responsibilities

• Getting a packet from your Team Captain
• Paying the 10 Personal Registration Fee
• Set a goal for yourself to try and raise at least
  75
• Be a Team Player if your team has a team
  fundraiser or needs your help.
• Getting your t-shirt size to your Team Captain
• Getting your money to the Team Captains for Bank
  Nights
• Help to develop your teams campsite
• Have FUN!!!

Relay Executive Committee

• Committees
• Publicity (in charge of advertising for UK Relay)
• Team Development(finds teams and updates team
  captains)
• Corporate Relations/Sponsorship (finds
  sponsorship money)
• Logistics (reserves rooms, equipment, etc.)
• Cancer Education/Advocacy (educate Relayers about
  cancer)
• Entertainment (plans events/games for Relay)
• Survivorship/Luminaria (makes survivors welcome,
  coordinates luminaria service)
• These Positions may change, be divided or
  combined.
• We need both committee chairs and committee
  members
• Pick up a sheet if you are interested in a
  committee.

UK Relay for Life 2005

• Tentative Dates for Relay are early to mid-April
• The first team captains meetings will be held
  Tuesday Nov 15th and Wednesday Nov 16th _at_ 9pm in
  the WT Young Library Keenland Room (Across the
  Hall)
• The Next Relay Committee Meeting will be next
  week at 9pm on November 9th Most Likely in the
  Student Center Room TBA
• Online Fundraising Should be available soon.
  Were hoping to have it up and running by the
  team captains meeting
