1
Entomophthoromycosis caused by Basidiobolus.
A chronic inflammatory or granulomatous disease
generally restricted to the limbs, chest, back or
buttocks primarily occurring in children with
predominance in males. Initially, lesions appear
as subcutaneous nodules, which develop into
massive, firm, indurated, painless swellings,
which are freely movable over the underlying
muscle but are attached to the skin which is
hyperpigmented but not ulcerated. Distribution
Tropical Africa, India, Indonesia and South East
Asia including the Northern Territory of
Australia. Aetiological Agent Basidiobolus
ranarum ( B. haptosporus) commonly present in
decaying fruit and vegetable matter, and as a
commensal in the intestinal tract of frogs, toads
and lizards.
