Design Specifications
  • Programmable Logic Device
  • Inputs
  • IR Sensor
  • Phone numbers
  • Voice message
  • Start of time window
  • Mode switch
  • Outputs
  • Auto-dialer
  • Dials phone numbers
  • Plays voice message

4
Auto-dialer
  • Difficult to find an off-the-shelf, ready-to-use
    auto-dialer
  • Most products have integrated auto-dialer
  • Instead, with sponsors permission, we used a
    modified auto-dialer and keypad

5
Xilinx Programmable Logic Device vs. Basic Atom
  • Xilinx
  • Cost
  • 49.95 Programming kit
  • 5.78 /ea. Bulk order (100)
  • Integrated Oscillator Timing
  • No need to order addition chips
  • Basic Atom PICmicro
  • Cost
  • 139.95 programming kit
  • 59.95 chip 15 I/O pins
  • ATOM Limited to 15 I/O pins
  • PIC 3.99 5.04 Volume order

6
Programming in VHDL for the CPLD
  • Compared to C/C
  • Helpful in learning
  • Statements executed concurrently
  • What we needed to use
  • Time conversion
  • Voltage drop
  • Help with debugging
  • Good tutorials

Mass Production
  • Use company to produce logic board
  • www.em.avnet.com
  • 256 flip-flops 100 12.38 per (150)
  • 128 flip-flops 100 5.78 per
  • 64 flip-flops 100 2.53 per
  • Create own auto-dialer and integrate into logic
    board

Packaging Design

Conclusions Recommendations
  • Prepare for mass production
  • Rid program of debug modes to optimize program
for production. Leads to cheaper and smaller
    electronics.
  • Mass produce electronics on smaller logic boards
    without unnecessary components
  • Look at methods such as injection molding for the
    packaging
  • Can easily add a smoke alarm/carbon monoxide
    detector to system
  • Smaller IR sensor calibration time (30sec)
  • Reduce to one battery pack
  • Would need to rid electronics of debugging LEDs
and programming to use less power
  • Build auto-dialer circuit from scratch integrate
    with other electronics
