Title: UTAH STATE UNIVERSITY REMOTE SENSING
1UTAH STATE UNIVERSITY REMOTE SENSINGGEOGRAPHIC
INFORMATION SYSTEM LABRATORIES
2Mission Statement
- Conduct basic and applied research using GIS and
Remote Sensing for surface mapping and spatial
characteristics of landscapes. - Provide students with opportunities to conduct
basic and applied research in land surface
processes with GIS and Remote Sensing. - Technology transfer for state, federal private
agencies, and individuals. - Emphasize the reporting of research results
through peer-reviewed publications and attendance
at professional meetings. - Provide support to collaborative laboratories at
USU.
3PERSONNEL
- 20 Full time employees
- 8 Attached to specific projects
- 9 Administrative and support staff
- 3 Attached to Alaska BLM
- 7 Graduate Students
- 8 Undergraduate Technicians
4EXPERTISE
- Geographic Information Systems.
- Remote Sensing.
- Land Cover Mapping.
- Field Data Collection, Interpretation, and
Integration. - Landscape Level Database Development and
Analysis. - Landscape Level Monitoring Techniques.
- Retrospective Analysis
- Training and Technology Transfer.
5CollaboratorsFederal, State, Local, Private
6Collaborative agreement between the College of
Natural Resources, USU and the Bureau of Land
Management. Provides an applied research
environment to transfer technology from USU and
the BLM. Provides resources to support graduate
student research into problems identified by BLM
personnel A total of 30 individual task orders
in the past 5 years have either been completed or
are underway.
7National Environmental Database
- 5 year sole source contract
- Data development for approx. 35 DA and NGB
sites - GIS program development for data integration
- IMS support for nationwide decision support
- Technical transfer to GIS and management
specialists
8ArcView data analysis tools allow land managers
at individual installations to analyze field data
coupled with spatial information. This allows
managers to identify landscape trends as a result
of training and/or management practices.
