Title: Welcome to Peer Street Upper Riccarton, Christchurch
1Welcome to Peer Street Upper Riccarton,
Christchurch
2Our house is located on a rear section. The
driveway is about 50 meters long. The front is so
non-descript that when we first moved in, we
often drove past it.And occasionally, we still
do. We made jokes about flying an American flag
on the street light next to our mailbox, just so
we could recognize our driveway.
Our solution is more subtle than a flag, but
still patriotic. Beside the lamp post,we planted
a climbing rose called 4th of July. The flowers
are striped red and white. Below the rose, we
planted blue pansies. Our neighbor has been
caring lovingly for this rose bush for us. The NZ
flag is also red, white and blue.
3Living in a rear section means your yard is quite
private. A 50 meter driveway has room for many
hydrangea bushes. Imagine if you had to shovel a
50 meter gravel driveway in Chicago. Imagine this
were Christchurch, and you had to weed a 50 meter
gravel driveway!
4Old garage, now a patio. New kitchen.
Our whole yard.

New garage, with Fritzs shop.
5We gave up trying to have a pristine drivewayand
we spent effort on flowers instead. Its Spring.
The daffodils are finished. The cool weather has
kept the tulips blooming. Roses are yet to
come. Pansies bloom year round. Along this fence
you will find roses in shades of orange, pink and
white. Below are 2 pictures of the same bed. At
right is a close-up.
6At last you can see our house. Turn right just
after the fence.
7Here is the new garage.Fritzs workshop is at
the back of the garage.Lets look at this flower
bed up close!
8The bed is yellow and red, with rose bushes,
pansies, poppies, daylilies, tulips and aphids!
9I love the magnolia tree above the door to
Fritzs workshop. It drops its petals like snow
on the sidewalk.
10A bright orange California poppy. You can find
this color outside in the bed of red and
yellow, and ...
11 inside Fritzs workshop!
12A borrowed router, a vise, power drill, sand
paper. Now, its better organized than this
picture shows.
13Walk from the garage on the sidewalk and you come
to our back door. I confess, its dark outside,
and I am trying to finish this slide show. So
this picture is from 1999. But the clematis and
laundry room door are the same, except the
clematis is just beginning to bloom right now. If
you turn your back to the laundry room door, this
is what youll see...
14The French doors lead to Beckys room. On the
right side of Beckys door, you can just barely
see where they added on to the house. The window
at the end is the kitchen window.
15Outside Beckys door is a small bleeding heart
bush, and some forget-me-nots. In the summer,
there will be daisies, chrysanthemums, and more
roses.
16Now lets walk from Beckys doorto the back
steps of the house.
Coral bells are Sarah Madduxs favorite flower.

you. Under the cherry tree, the Solomons seal
hasjust started flowering.
19Please dont walk on the dirt. Were trying to
grow grass.
The new bricked-up garden bed with pots of
rosesmatches the 40 year old brick terrace
nearby.
20Heres our patio,the old garage pad.Well

Mercy was the first hybrid tea rose to bloom this
year.
22Well head back to the house and go inside for a
bit.
23Let me show you some snow we had a while back.
Earlier I said it doesnt snow here, but in fact
we did have one day of snow. Our new windows and
French doors kept us warm.
24Monica rose
Here is our view from the kitchen window. Were
working on having flowers year round. At the
moment this bed is mostly flowers that will bloom
in summer. Earlier this spring, we enjoyed one
bright daffodil and a few red tulips. Now walk
backwards and wait until night ...
