Title: The Gift Economy of Car Blogging

The Gift Economy
of Car Blogging
2
Whats a Gift Economy?
  • Gifford Pinchot says.
  • hunter-gatherer societies, the hunter's status
was not determined by how much of the kill he
ate, but rather by what he brought back for
    others.
  • The first step toward a sustainable sense of
success is taking pride in the value of our
contributions to others rather than taking pride
in the value of our possessions.
  • scientists with highest status are not those who
possesses the most knowledge they are the ones
who have contributed the most to their fields
  • Antelope meat called for a gift economy because
it was perishable and there was too much for any
one person to eat. Information also loses value
over time and has the capacity to satisfy more
than one. In many cases information gains rather
than loses value through sharing. While the
exchange economy may have been appropriate for
the industrial age, the gift economy is coming
back as we enter the information age.

POTLATCH
  • Potlatches were social occasions given by a host
  • to establish or uphold his status position in
    society.
  • Often they were held to mark a
significant event in his family, such as the
birth of a child, a daughter's first menses, or a
    son's marriage.
  • Potlatches are to be distinguished from feasts
    in that
  • guests are invited to a potlatch to share food
    and receive gifts or
  • payment. Potlatches held by commoners were mainly
    local, while elites
  • often invited guests from many tribes. Potlatches
    were also the venue in
  • which ownership to economic and ceremonial
    privileges was asserted,
  • displayed, and formally transferred to heirs

What is more important to you as a car-blogger
LINKS or POSTS ? and why?
  • I think the content (posts) is more important
than anything else. Since car-blogging is not a
contest there really are no winners or losers. I
link to others when it seems appropriate to me,
or when it helps solidify the point I'm trying to
make, or when I'm giving credit to someone.
  • That being said, I always enjoy links to my site
(www.ifitsgotanengine.com) so more people get to
    read what I've written.

What is more important to you as a car-blogger
LINKS or POSTS ? and why?
  • This is a hard question, but if you don't have
perfect posts, then people will not want to read
them anyway -- links are important, they get the
word out about your site and what you have to
say.- You have to have a balance of both to be
    successful.
  • Brian (Racedriven.com)

13
What is more important to you as a car-blogger
LINKS or POSTS ? and why?
  • For me the content of the Post is whats most
important. Its all about my ability to have my
say. But Links are almost as important. I link to
sites that I think others will find interesting
and especially to sites that have linked to mine.
Ive been told that linking to others will
increase my traffic, and to be honest, I like the
idea of increased traffic. Joe (My Ford Dreams)

RECIPROCAL LINKS

What is more important to you as a car-blogger
LINKS or POSTS ? and why?
  • Posts. It's easy to find links, any number of
search engines will return too many to go thru.
But, posts I follow are from like-minded persons
and I get ideas from those. My blog (like most)
is made up of some stuff I write myself... and
some other blogs that I find interesting.

What is more important to you as a car-blogger
LINKS or POSTS ? and why?
  • Neither links nor posts can specifically be said
to be more important. From one perspective, the
web can be thought of as nodes and connections.
In this case, a post would be a node, and a link
would be a "connection" to another node. What's
more important is communicating the best
    data/information/knowledge. Sometimes the best
data/info/knowledge is unique new content (a
"post"), and sometimes it's a connection to some
other content (a "link"). For example, Google has
virtually no content. Yet, they communicate the
best content, without necessarily creating it.
    Data/information/knowledge is much more important
than the form it takes.Obviously, other sites
will link to good content. A site with many
linkbacks is like a person's idea that gets
mentioned often. Linkbacks are a method of
ratifying content. Ratification can be very
    helpful, both online and off.

Youve Gotta Have Both Sometimes
18
What is more important to you as a car-blogger
LINKS or POSTS ? and why?
  • The most important thing when writing a blog is
its overall aim. Like with Autoblog the goal
dictated was as many posts as possible to build
traffic. Good quality just helped. We mixed link
posts and original posts and it worked well.
With MPHs blog it is supposed to be the
backstage so to speak of what life is like
running a car magazine. These posts are almost
entirely original and we want it to be added
content to the main mph site. We dont want to
link to other blogs because people arent coming
to us for that kind of stuff. 10 other sites
already do that. For a new car blogger you have
to think what do I want to do with this blog if
youre just joe public and want to express your
views about the state of the auto world it is
hard to do well. Create a blog about BMWs, Saabs
etc and you could get a lot of instant readers.

What is more important to you as a car-blogger
LINKS or POSTS ? and why?
  • Posts have to be the most important. I much
prefer reading someone's opinion of something
than just a link to a news story.

What is more important to you as a car-blogger
LINKS or POSTS ? and why?
  • Links are more important in terms of attracting
traffic and google. My stats go up when someone
links to my blog (which isnt very often).
  • Posts are important in creating something that
would make a reader come back. Content is still
king when it comes to making someone read your
    stuff.
  • In terms of what I want to achieve as a blogger,
links are more important and are something that I
cant control. Ben K (BENS CAR BLOG)
