1
Program in Health and Medical Education Research
(PHMER)
  • Background
  • - Faculty needs assessment survey, 2008
  • - Strategic planning sessions, 2008-09
  • Four goals for 2009-10
  • Increase capacity and skill in education research
    through development and support
  • Prepare and submit at least 2 research proposals
for external funding in priority areas of
    research
  • Continue to build program awareness and
collaboration both within and outside Dalhousie
  • Secure sustainable funding for PHMER by March,
    2010.

2
Goal 2 PHMER Research Working Groups
  • Four interdisciplinary research working groups
    were developed
  • Assessment and feedback (11 members)
  • Professionalism (8 members)
  • Interprofessional education (10 members)
  • Distributed education (7 members)
  • Each group has met online/in person and continue
    to collaborate.
  • Goal is to develop a research proposal for
    external submission in Spring, 2010.

3
Undergraduate Level
  • PHMER generally supports achievement of
    accreditation standards by
  • Reviewing current literature and providing
evidence for best practice in UGME (Section 11,
    Educational Program, all ED standards,
particularly Section C, Teaching and Evaluation)
  • Providing Faculty Development in education
research (developing faculty skill and capacity
in reviewing , evaluating, and using evidence
    within their educational structures/programs)

4
Undergraduate Level (contd)
  • Directly addressing accreditation standards
    through targeted research groups
  • Assessment and feedback (ED-30, noncompliant
    standard)
  • Professionalism (MS-31-A)
  • Interprofessional education (ED-17)
  • Distributed education (ED-8, noncompliant
    standard)
  • Supporting/assisting the development, awareness
and understanding of translational research with
regard to students research skills (ED-17A)

5
Undergraduate Level (contd)
  • Supports and enables DMNB and UGME Evaluation
  • 1. PHMER Director acts as chair for the DMNB
    Evaluation Committee.
  • 2. addressing evaluation of program
    comparability across sites (ED-8)
  • 3. addressing evaluation of program
    effectiveness according to accreditation
    standards (ED-46, ED-47 and ED-33, latter
    noncompliant).

6
Postgraduate Level
  • Engage residents in education research working
    groups
  • Determine postgraduate priorities for medical
    education research.

7
Faculty Level
  • Provide series of faculty development workshops
    on education research
  • Provide opportunity for faculty to improve skills
as educator, scholar and collaborator through
    PHMERs four interprofessional research working
    groups

8
Other Contributions
  • PHMER provides direction and support for current
    and potentially future curriculum issues
  • PHMER is poised to impact current local, national
    and international medical education concerns.

9
Looking to the Future Curriculum Renewal
  • Research/evaluation are integral to ongoing
    curriculum renewal and development.
  • Curriculum renewal and education research go hand
in hand. As a result, PHMER is working closely
with a number of UGME curriculum renewal groups
to inform them of the evidence, through lit
    reviews.

10
Looking to the Future Curriculum Renewal
  • PHMER encourages faculty to share practical
education problems and to collaboratively seek
    solutions through scholarship
  • Through its network of contacts and its research
working groups, PHMER is building awareness of
    shared educational challenges and research
    approaches to them.
  • PHMER will become the virtual hub and broker of
education research knowledge and people skilled
    in medical education research

11
New Brunswick
  • PHMER is actively collaborating with NB by
  • Maintaining close contact with Asst Dean DMNB
    Medical Program
  • DMNB Assistant Dean, Research, and UNB nurse
educator are members of PHMER Advisory Committee
  • NB community is invited to all PHMER related
education research events, on mailing lists
  • NB faculty, staff are members of PHMERs
    research working groups.

12
Interprofessional
  • Interprofessionalism (IP) is embedded within
PHMERs name, goals and philosophy, and evidenced
    in our approach
  • PHMER needs assessment survey conducted across
three faculties and hospitals, and NB
  • PHMERs advisory group is IP
  • PHMERs working groups are IP
  • PHMER continues to build collaborations
  • PHMER Director is a member of Dal IPE working
    groups

13
Conclusion
  • PHMER strives to serve undergraduate,
    postgraduate, faculty development, continuing
    medical education within an interprofessional
context, in NS and NB. (Maritimes?)
  • Securing sustainable funding is our biggest
challenge (currently funded until March, 2010).
