We all know time has been around a long timejust
how long?
  • In 1918, Henry Luce and Briton Hadden were
sophomores at Yale. They were amazed at the
ignorance of current events displayed by soldiers
at their army officers training camp in South
Carolina. Their trails met again in the fall of
1921, when they joined the Baltimore News.

7
Continuing 0n
  • They both resigned in Feb. of 1922 to go to
New York to pursue their dream of creating a new
vehicle of informing Americans about national
and international events. It took them over a
year and a half to raise 87,000. Their plan, as
related in their prospectus, was to report all
the weeks important news in a brief and
    organized fashion.

8
More
  • They aimed for one hundred articles of four
hundred words or less. They determined to make
clear which positions the editors thought were
stronger. They sought to oppose the interference
and rising cost of government and to promote new
    ideas.

9
March 3, 1923
  • The first issue was 28 pages, featured
retiring Congressman Joe Cannon, and sold for the
rather high price of fifteen cents. There were 22
departments and as would become standard policy,
all articles except one were anonymous. The
magazine fought for its life in the first three
years, but circulation reached 111,000 in 1926.

10
Lets look at some current stats!
  • There is no better way to do that then to pay a
visit to our good friends at Ulrichs!
  • And lets see if we can get lucky with the folks
    at the Library of Congress.
