Fun Facts The Statue was given by France to the
people of the United States to recognize the
friendship established during the American
Revolution. The gift commemorated the Centennial
of the American Declaration of Independence. Did
you know the statue was actually built on an old
fort? Fort Wood was used during the War of
1812. The statue arrived in New York Harbor in
June of 1885 and was dedicated on October 28,
1886, ten years late for the centennial of our
Independence. The tablet in the statues left
hands reads July 4th, 1776 (in Roman numerals).
The 25 windows in the crown symbolize gemstones
found on the earth and the heavens rays shining
over the world. The seven rays of the crown
represent the seven seas and continents.
