    West African sub-Region

    knowledge of modern medical education such as

  • teaching quality assurance.

    accreditation requirements
  • Urgent need for quality assurance in the
    training of personnel

Tackling the Problems
  • Enhance the quality of undergraduate teaching by
    training teachers academic skills while keeping
    them on the job in their various institutions
  • Teach research methods by getting the teachers to
    execute projects they identify, to solve specific
    problems they encounter in their institutions

Expected Impact
EDULINK
  • Train 4 teachers per year from the Medical
    Nursing Schools of each of the participating
    Universities to be more effective teachers and
    researchers.
  • Have these teachers apply their newly acquired
    skills in their institutions right from during
    the period of their training
  • Improve the quality of medical and nursing
    graduates of participating universities

Difficulties Encountered
  • Getting institutional approval for the programme
    this is the first distance-learning based
    Masters level degree programme at Ibadan fear
    of the novel
  • Setting up the e-Learning infrastructure
  • Having sufficient numbers of trained medical
    educators to serve as tutors
  • Change in leadership in Partner Institutions

  • Getting West African Partner Institutions to
    buy-in into the initiative
  • Designing appropriate course modules for
    e-Learning, bearing in mind the limitations in
    communication infrastructure in the sub-Region
  • Getting teachers in Ibadan to accept the
    additional workload

Sustainability Issues

  • Appropriate and affordable fees for prospective
    students
  • Evidence that course graduates are more
    effective teachers and better academics
  • Maintaining and renewing the infrastructure for
    learning
  • Getting course graduates to serve as mentors and
    tutors for new entrants
