Title: The Titanic: Fair or Foul

1
The Titanic Fair or Foul?
2
Women and Children
  • The prevailing notions of the time were that
women and children should be saved first. In
    this case, they were.
  • Although men far outnumbered women on Titanic,
the passenger survivors were 59 female and only
30 male, with children comprising the other 11.

3
The Evidence
  • While women and children were saved first, the
    upper classes were saved best

4
Bias in Who Was Saved?
  • Upper and middle class people were much more
likely to survive than lower classes.
  • The Waterfront Workers Union criticized the
vicious class antagonism that the Titanic
    demonstrated.
  • 62 of first class survived, 41 of second class,
and only 25 of steerage, with the vast majority
    being women and children

5
Were people saved fairly?
6
Unfair Rescue
  • The first class passengers, especially women and
children, were far more likely to survive than
    any other group on board.
  • There were many historical critiques at the time.
One rich couple was accused of bribing the crew
to let their lifeboat go with only 12 people in
    it.
