  • Recalling details

2
Strategies
  • When reading a paragraph, first identify the main
idea. Then look for details that support the
    main idea.
  • To find a particular supporting detail, scan the
passage for a key word or phrase. Then read
closely to find the answer you need.
  • Use your finger, an index card, or a ruler to
keep your place as you scan down a page.
  • Read each selection to find answers to the
    questions about supporting details.

  • In 1998 James Camerons film Titanic won the
Academy Award for Best Picture. The film broke
box office records and was one of the most
expensive films ever made, costing over 280
million to produce. The movie tells the story of
the titanic, a luxury cruise ship that sank in
1912. As shown in breathtaking detail in the
film, on its first voyage the Titanic hit an
iceberg and began taking on water. As water
filled the hold of the ship, the front part, or
bow, sank into the ocean. After a short while,
the ship snapped in two. The back part, or
stern, of the ship raised upward and then it,
too, sank into the ocean. All told 1,513 people
aboard the Titanic lost their lives.

  • As terrible as the titanic disaster was, it was
not the deadliest event ever to occur at sea.
Early in 1945, World War II was drawing to a
close. The Germans were suffering heavy
casualties against the advancing Russian army.
In January of that year, a German Luxury liner
called Wilhelm Gustloff set sail from Danzig
(now Gdansk), Poland, carrying 6,050 refugees
from the advancing Russian army. As the ship
headed for open sea, it took on additional
passengers who arrived by small boat.

5
  • On January 30, shortly before mid-night, the
Russian submarine S-13 torpedoed the Wilhelm
Gustloff. Three torpedoes hit the ship, which
sank about fifteen minutes later. Only 964
passengers were rescued, and many of those later
died. It is estimated that the sinking of the
Wilhelm Gustolff led to the deaths of as many as
7,000 people, over four and a half times as many
people as went down with the titanic.
