• Tanzania - 120 cafés in Dar es Salaam
• Mozambique - Invaruba smart facility
• Cuba - pay phones with internet access in year
  2000
• Nepal Wifi hotspot in year 2005 internet
  cafés cost 0.50 per hour!

Fixed LinesEurope and S Africa (1)

• Basic Service 38kbps / 56kbps dial up
• Isdn not much faster but phone and data available
  simultaneously
• ADSL shared at Isp level.
• Cap of 3 gigs, then differential pricing local
  and international
• Broadband 1 meg per sec

• Connection via cable, infrared, and bluetooth
• Now GPRS or 3G charged on data transferred
• Cheap in S Africa US 0.30 per meg
• UK US 3.60 per meg

• Edge enhanced GPRS up to 200kps change between
  GPRS and Edge transparent to user
• Main use WAP or light web browsing
• Teething problems when crossing cells
• Main use vehicle tracking
• APN in GPRS settings link to private network or
  VPN

• 3G hi speed data link. The high cost was the
  purchase of frequency bands
• Much faster than GPRS can use for video
  conference calls
• These use proprietary ISPs, e.g. Vodafone in UK
• New phones can multitask data and voice

• distances 40kms
• Needs masts and modems speed superior to
  WIFI
• WiMax Intel embedding into new motherboard
  chipsets
• One solution to the last mile problem

• Wireless modem using data cellular technology
• Optimised for data speeds up to 1 meg per second
• Speed depends on no. of users online
• Installed in major cities in S Africa
• Threat to fixed line and mobile phone companies

• Satellite data services
• Twice GPRS data rates
• Global coverage
• Spot beam to high usage areas
• Very expensive
• Mainly used at sea and remote geological sites
• Also journalists in war areas
