Overview
  • Developed by DeFilippo Scott (1978)
  • For both training and evaluating the reception of
    connected discourse.
  • Identification procedure the partner speaks a
    portion of text material, the client repeats
    whatever part of the message has been received,
    and the partner clarifies as necessary to ensure
    correct message reception.

  • The segment length depends on
  • what is logical
  • Rs memory
  • what T considers will ensure Rs success
  • Does not assess comprehension
  • Qualified in words per minute (wpm)

Factors that may influence communication rate
  • Material (vocabulary, language, complexity,
    style)
  • Ts speech rate, language sense, sensitivity to
    Rs needs, ability to be flexible and demanding
  • Rs communication skills, flexibility, tolerance,
    speed of response (confidence), intelligibility
    of speech.

Tracking in Intervention
  • T only allowed to offer help that was suggested
    by R
  • develop clients skill of using repair strategies
  • Demonstrate clarification strategies, discuss or
    select from a list

  • Erber (1996) recommends that if the client still
    cannot identify a word or phrase after three
    attempts, then that part of the message is
    bypassed. Notes are taken for discussion later.
  • Often calculated as the amount of text that can
    be read in 20 minutes.
  • Useful if you remember the problems.
