2 Jno. 9-11, Whosoever goeth onward and abideth
not in the teaching of Christ, hath not God he
that abideth in the teaching, the same hath both
the Father and the Son. If any one cometh unto
you, and bringeth not this teaching, receive him
not into your house, and give him no greeting
for he that giveth him greeting partaketh in his
evil works. Please compare Matt. 1612, The
teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees Rev.

25Abilene Christian Universitys Proposals for
Reforming Churches of Christ in the 21st
Century 1. We should cease our elite and
sectarian behavior, and ask our brethren in all
denominations to forgive our sins, especially
that we said they weren't saved. 2. We must not
say that we have the truth, but that we are on a
spiritual journey, just as our brethren in the
denominations are on their spiritual
journey. (http//wwwreporter-news.com/abil/nw_loca

26Abilene Christian Universitys Proposals for
Reforming Churches of Christ in the 21st
Century 3. We should have open fellowship with
all who say they believe in Jesus. We should
follow the example of brave reformists who ask
denominational preachers to share pulpits with
their congregations. We should also share major
social and religious events with our
denominational brethren. We should be ecumenical
in our thinking and practice, and should openly
align ourselves with the current evangelical
ecumenical movement. (http//www.

27Abilene Christian Universitys Proposals for
Reforming Churches of Christ in the 21st
Century 4. We should continue to say that
baptism is important, but that it is not
essential for salvation. We should recognize
that there are many non-immersed believers who
are saved. (http//home. christianity.com/local/82

29Homer Hailey believes that those who are
baptized into Christ may remain in their present
marital state. That is a position that is shared
by a small minority of the Christians with whom I
regularly associate.I do not believe he is
correct (in his views on MDR, sw). (Christianity
Magazine, 11/88, p. 6)
It is perfectly proper that some congregations
have not, and would not, invite Homer Hailey to
preach because of the position he holds on this
subject. Other, rightly I believe, have decided
to use him in spite of the difference. (Harrell,
p. 8, my emph, sw)

9-11 II. HOW BRETHRENS PRACTICES HAVE AFFECTED
THE PREACHING OF THE WHOLE COUNSEL OF GOD
33"You are on the right road, and what- ever you
do, don't let anyone persuade you that you can
successfully combat error by fellowshipping it
and going along with it. I have tried. I
believed at the start that was the only way to do
it. I've never held membership in a congre-
gation that used instrumental music. I
have, however, accepted invitations to preach
with- out distinctions between churches that used
it and churches that didn't. I've gone along
with their papers and magazines and things of
that sort. Dur- ing all these years I have taught
the truth as the New Testament teaches it to
every young preacher who passed through the
College of the Bible. Yet, I do not know of more
than six of them who are preaching the truth
today. It won't work. (J.W. McGarvey)
