LOSC Functions and Features

• Establishes rules governing all uses of oceans
  and their resources
• Grants coastal States sovereign rights in
  200-nautical mile exclusive economic zone (EEZ)
  with respect to natural resources and certain
  economic activities
• Grants all other States freedom of navigation and
  overflight in EEZ, as well as freedom to lay
  submarine cables and pipelines
• Allows all States freedoms of navigation,
  overflight, scientific research and fishing on
  the high seas they are obliged to adopt measures
  to manage and conserve living resources
• Bounds States to prevent control marine
  pollution they are liable for damage caused by
  violation of their international obligations to
  combat such pollution
• Bounds States to conserve marine ecosystems
