The Better Homes Project

Thornhill Plus You and Southampton City Council
are working in partnership on the Better Homes
project a project refurbishing over 2000 council
properties with new kitchens and bathrooms. The
project will also improve communal areas to
blocks of flats across Thornhill.

fun celebrations, acknowledging the people that
have made a difference to the Thornhill
community.

In the Community Directory, there are over 500
useful contact details of local organisations.
Each entry in the book explains what different
organisations do.

5The Credit Union
The Credit Union
The Credit Union based in Thornhill gives access
to affordable, low interest loans. It now has two
daytime collection points each week held in
Thornhill.
So far 40 adult members have enrolled, and it
encourages junior members to save some of their
pocket money to learn the value of saving for
those wanted items.

7Bursledon Road Fences
Bursledon Road Fences
The Bursledon road fences were upgraded to
replace the old wooden fences which were falling
apart, had missing planks of wood and gave a
negative image to the estate.

8E-Bulletin
The Thornhill Plus You E-Bulletin is a monthly,
internal, e-communications tool, providing the
organisations stakeholders with the latest news,
project updates and events planned for the month.
9Ladies Netball
Ladies Netball
Motiv8 Thornhill won funding to run a Return to
Netball course for women who have never played
or have not played the sport since school. The
initial 10 week course was a huge success, with
25 women who regularly attend the training. The
Thornbirds, have been affiliated and have joined
a league.

11Motiv8 Thornhill
Motiv8 Thornhill have a wide range of clubs and
events that are available for everyone. There is
a weekly planner (left) that features all of the
regular activities and a calendar on the
website. This has been hugely successful
receiving a lot of positive feedback. Many of the
clubs/events have experience a large number of
new participants.

A small grants fund for community groups in

It has supplied a whole range of needed support

13Thornhill Carnival
Motiv8 Thornhill supported the Crazy Thornhill
Carnival to work with top Notting Hill Carnival
artists.
The group learned new skills of costume making
and toured in the summer of 2006, scooping many
1st prizes across Southampton and the
neighbouring boroughs.
In 2007 Motiv8 Thornhill were awarded 69,000 to
run a carnival training project this enabled
artists to gain level 2 and 3 in NCFE Creative
Crafts.
This will give the artists an opportunity to
teach carnival skills and run workshops for local
businesses, schools and community groups.

14Thornhill Plus You Website
The Thornhill Plus You website offers a wide
range of information and is very user friendly.
Since its launch date in June 2005 it has been
very successful. Starting with about 30 hits per
day on average, rising to 80 hits on average per
day in 2007.
There is also a community website underway that
is completely run by residents.

Thornhill Plus You communicate with the community
in a number of ways. One of the most popular
communication tools amongst residents is
Thornhill Plus Yous quarterly newsletter the
thornhill today.
The newsletter is packed full of useful
information, activities, events, competitions,
recipes and project updates.
The thornhill today is sent to every resident
in Thornhill, the media, councillors, voluntary
groups, schools, community centres and local
businesses.

16Motiv8 Volunteer Programme
Motiv8 Thornhill
Volunteer Programme
Motiv8 Thornhills volunteers programme has been
extremely successful, currently there are over 30
volunteers.
They work on a number of Motiv8 Thornhill
projects and some volunteers have taken courses
to develop their skills.

17Winning With Women
This Motiv8 project is currently funding 20
women, mostly from Thornhill who are unemployed,
looking for a career change or who are returning
back to work.
It helps them to access free individually
tailored career training in the Sports and
Leisure industry, with the view of gaining
employment.
They take part in NVQs which enables them to get
a job in areas such as Health and Fitness
Instructors, to Sports and Swimming coaches.

YASP
The Young Adults Support Project has worked
successfully with many Thornhill young adults
between the ages of 19 and 25.
It has supported some of Thornhills young adults
to find work and then stay in those jobs other
clients have participated in the Duke of
Edinburgh Awards, while others have accessed
training and substance abuse help.

19Better Neighbourhood
Better Neighbourhood
Improving the external environment to walk up
blocks!
The Better Neighbourhood project works alongside
residents to improve the space around all 88
walk-up blocks in Thornhill.
A very successful pilot project in Jerome Court
and Byron Road saw residents joining consultation
sessions to identify their top three concerns.
This related to parking, play space and the
general appearance of the area.
From these sessions designs were compiled,
highlighting with residents the improvements that
could be made. The pilot was successfully
completed in 2007.

20Hinkler Green Play Area
An existing playground has been entirely
re-equipped, re-surfaced and fencing has been
erected

Lydgate Green park was upgraded at the start of
2003 and open for use in the summer of 2003

22The Multi-use Games Area
The opening of the Multi-use Games Area is
helping to aid the regeneration of Thornhill by
providing the community with a state of the art
facility, for all members of the Community to
participate in physical activity.
The facility has a weekly planned timetable of
events including football, netball and multi
sports sessions.

The Police/PCSOs
Thornhill has its own team of dedicated police
officers and PCSOs. There is a police office
based in Tatwin Crescent and numbers for
residents to call if they require police
assistance.

24The School Minibuses
In Thornhill there are 3 primary schools.
Thornhill Plus You funded each of the schools so
that they could buy one school bus
The buses will be for transporting the pupils to
school trips and other activities.

25Thornhill Centre for Healthy Living
Thornhills Centre for Healthy Living opened in
2006 as a one-stop shop for community health and
GP services. Since it opened, the number of new
community health services practising in Thornhill
has increased.
As well as housing local health visiting and
midwifery teams, it also offers a wide variety of
services for the community,
including
Breastfeeding support and other family support
groups,
Contraception and sexual health drop ins,
Diabetes drop in for children and adults,
Epilepsy support services,
Child and adolescent mental health service,
Stop smoking support,
Paediatric services,
Audiology services
and a dental suite

26Thornhill Tidy Team
The Thornhill Tidy Team are here to try and keep
the Thornhill area nice and clean with the help
of all the residents and the people who are
passing by. So you can make their job easier by
binning your rubbish instead of dropping it on
the floor.

27ELSAs
Since its inception in 1999, Thornhill Plus You
has funded 6 Emotional Literacy Support
Assistants to work in Hightown, Kanes Hill and
Thornhill Primary Schools.
With two ELSAs working in each school, the scheme
has really made a difference. The number of
pupils excluded for half a day or detained during
lunchtimes has been significantly improved. In
just one school year exclusions reduced from 240
to 8.
The Assistants work with children who have
challenging or difficult behaviour and offer them
a place to learn and develop without disrupting
their class.

28Motiv8 Thornhill Holiday Programme
Motiv8 Thornhill took the lead on providing and
co-ordinating a successful holiday programme.
The activities booklet is distributed to the
majority of the Thornhill area, which means the
activities sell out quickly. There is a wide
range of activities on offer, so there is
something for everyone to enjoy. Motiv8 Thornhill
make every effort to ensure that there are things
to do that people would not normally experience,
such as a mobile farm and a professional touring
theatre.

30The Handy Person Scheme
Handyperson helped all Thornhill residents live a
more independent life without risking safety.
The Handyperson scheme was set up in Southampton
to assist people aged over 60 and/or with a
disability.

31Thornhill Community Health Group
Involvement and funding for health projects
An annual sum of money was made available by the
PCT to fund smaller health focussed projects that
would benefit the Thornhill community.
Since this funding stream was launched in 2006,
over 30 projects have been successful, and have
been awarded with funding.
Projects range from Reality!, a group who work
with young people concerning teenage parenthood
to a fresh vegetable growing club at Thornhill
Primary School.

Thornhill pupils of Hightown, Kanes Hill and
Thornhill Primary School are benefiting from a
number of Thornhill Plus You funded improvements

Reception/Junior playgrounds revamped, Musical
Instruments, Music Tuition, Visits/trips Fund,
ICT, Play Therapy Assistants, Asbestos Removal,
Speech Language Resources,
Optical Mark Reader (OMR) Machine, New Windows,
Doors Security Fencing, Storage, Vision Panels,
Toilet upgrades, Audio System, Stage, Video
Editing Suite and Sports Equipment.

Thornhill Voice gives residents the chance to
tell Thornhill Plus You their views without
leaving their home.
Every 1 to 3 months Thornhill Voice produces a
questionnaire covering areas such as health,
community safety, young people, education and
employment in Thornhill helping residents to
influence Thornhills future!

Working Links offers
specialist support to local
unemployed people in the
Thornhill area, which is free
and confidential.
Working in partnership with Thornhill Plus You
they provide the best possible service to anyone
thinking about starting work. Since April 2000,
Working Links has helped nearly 85,000 people
back into suitable and sustainable jobs

35Cooking Pots
Cooking Pots is a scheme that helps people eat
healthier and shows people how to cook different
types of food. They show you different types of
food/ recipes and then they show you how to cook
them.

36Dumbleton Copse
Supported by local youth workers, Thornhill Tidy
Team and a range of other agencies, young local
people have formed a constituted group and have
worked hard to redevelop the play area into an
off-road bike track.
