Bread Butter Operations
  • POD setup
  • Line Control
  • POD flow
  • Screening
  • Dispensing
  • Security

3
Common Concepts in PODs
  • One regional form
  • Command Control standardized regionally
  • Non-Medical algorithm same in every POD
  • Education takes place at HOME
  • One way in, one way out
  • Multiple dispensing queues
  • 24 hr operations

4
Different Modalities
  • Rapid dispensing in all lines (no specialized
    lines)
  • Specialized dispensing lines
  • i.e. special needs line, fast track etc.
  • Walk-ins vs. Drive-thru models
  • Pre-screened POD (first responder PODs)
  • Dispensing using a roster

ENTRANCE
6
  • ONE REGION.ONE FORM
  • Available in English and Spanish (other
    languages forthcoming)
  • Form is typically filled out while waiting in
    the main line
  • Forms may be mass printed on newsprint
  • Some people may need help filling out their
    formconsider line floaters

7
  • Screener/Queue Stop this is the choke point
where the main line gets split into queues
  • Two methods screen before putting into
    dispensing lines (specialized dispensing)
  • OR
  • Screen right at the dispensing table

8
  • Step 3 will consist of
  • Picking the right bottle of medication
  • Picking the proper quantity of bottles
  • Writing CIPRO recipient(s) name(s) on bottles
  • Picking appropriate medication information
  • Dropping form into a collection box
  • Placing medications handouts into bag
  • Directing person to listen to TV/Radio for more
    instructions

9
  • Exit staff
  • Ensures that no one leaves with their form
  • Reminds people to watch TV/listen to radio for
    medication instructions
  • Directs to exit
  • Prevents backflow

10
POD SET UP
  • Command Post
  • Keep a visual on operations but far enough
    away to avoid chaos
  • Communications Unit
  • Should be close enough to relay information,
but able to perform without distracting others

11
Supply Unit
  • Secured area where supplies and medication are
    stored
  • Should be climate controlled, protected from
    elements, crowd etc.
  • Doorway must be wide enough to accommodate a
    pallet (48)
  • Accessible via elevator or ground level (no
    stairs!)

12
Supply Unit
  • Loading dock access is idealmost SNS assets
arrive via 53 tractor trailer. Forklifts will
be needed if no loading dock.
  • At least one pallet jack should be on hand
  • Handtruck, dolly or other sturdy cart to move
    equipment/supplies
  • Worst case bucket brigade methodonly works
effectively if you have lots of staff on-hand.

13
Dont forget to take care of staff!
14
POD SET UP
  • Central feed line
  • Whenever possible, try to protect line from
weather. snaking fits more in a line but
typically requires stanchions that are at least
    waist high.

15
Line Control
  • Keep lines/lanes TIDY
  • Snake the line fits more in a room (walking only)
  • More queues faster thru-put. but will require
    more personnel to control
  • Use signaling devices (flags, traffic wands etc.)
  • Always put staff in high-visibility vests
  • Use traffic cones, stanchions, caution tape etc.
    to define lines

16
Which line is easier to control?
17
Screening
  • One method is to establish lines based on what
the person is picking up. This requires that the
form is tabulated before they are sent to a
    dispensing queue.
  • Fast-track Doxy Only
  • General Dispensing Cipro and Doxy
  • Peds Needs Have kids under 9 and/or any other
special needs that may hold up the line

18
For Example
EXIT

Doxy
Peds Needs
19
Other Screening Setups
  • Some counties may COMBINE screening
dispensingPerson in line goes to the FIRST
available dispensing station regardless of what
    they are picking up.
  • The form is given to the dispensing table to
    determine meds give appropriate bottles/printed
    matter.

20
Or
EXIT
21
Use Fixed Ushers to Keep the Line Moving
  • Ushers are not Runners
  • Primary purpose is to keep the line flowing in
    the right direction
  • Construction flags and light-up wands work well

22
Dispensing
  • Bottom of form has medication totals
  • Only Cipro recipients get name written on the
    bottle
  • Give handouts appropriate to the meds you are
    dispensing
  • If picking up for children, include Pediatric
    dosing handout
  • Place all items in bag
  • Collect form and drop into bin
  • NEVER SEND ANYONE BACKWARDS THROUGH THE LINE!

23
Security and Ushers
  • Physical presence will have psychological
    effectdeterrent to trouble makers
  • Keep line moving and orderly
  • One entry.one line direction.one exit
  • Use the police officer at the POD when needed
  • Mental Health professionals may help
    diffuse/reassure anxious, agitated (non-violent)
    people
  • Use the physical layout/structure to assist with
    Security

24
Use All Available Resources
25
Outside planning is important too!
  • Remember to keep car traffic flowing in one
directionuse your police, security and other
    resources!
  • A few orange cones can go a long way
  • THINK SAFETY!
