Title: Classroom Applications of Research on SelfRegulated Learning SRL

1
Classroom Applications of Research on
Self-Regulated Learning (SRL)
  • Scott G. Paris and Alison H. Paris, Educational
    Psychologist, 2001

2
Two ideas that I might use in the classroom
  • Teachers can teach students how to become
    self-regulated learners
  • Self-regulated learners become motivated and
    independent learners

3
Description of the ideas
  • 1. SRL results in students who become responsible
for their own learning. Students can be taught
    specific strategies to become self-motivated.
  • 2. Self regulated learners become motivated and
independent because they have learned how to
    monitor their progress

4
When and how I might use it in the classroom
  • 1. In teaching students how to write
  • A. High school science students are must
learn how to write well. As they prepare their
reports, presentations and portfolios I will use
the procedures described in the article to help
    them become better writers.
  • B. All test will include a writing
    section
  •
  • 2. Students can use portfolios for
    self-assessment
  •        Portfolios will help students monitor
    their own progress.

5
Procedures that will help me apply the idea
  • 1. Teaching students how to write-explain
    writing rules-model use of writing-daily
writing by students on topics that they
    chose-peer review -feedback
  • 2. Self-assessment
  • -ask them what was the difficult part of
their work-ask students to explain their
work-ask them to do a self-review-ask how they
fell about the feedback that they received from
    their teacher
