1
Using the Internet
  • Garden Googling

2
What is the Internet?
  • In the late 1960s the Advanced Research Projects
Agency of the DoD developed the ARPAnet 1st
    message October 29, 1969
  • ARPAnet grew into the Internet through the
    development of standardized communication
protocols (think a single global language)
  • Initially used phone lines at 50 Kbps today
employs satellite links and fiber optics at 100s
    to 1000s of Mbps
  • Now the Internet is a Network of Networks
linking millions of domestic, academic, business
    and government networks

3
Internet? (Cont.)
  • These networks carry the files, web pages, and
the other resources of the World Wide Web (WWW)
  • Locations on the WWW are identified by their
    Uniform Resource Locators (URLs), e.g.
    www.chattanoogarose.org
  • Top-level Domain Names (TLDs) segregate the URLs
by function, e.g., .com for commercial entities,
.edu for educational institutions, .gov for
    government agencies, .org for non-government
    organizations, etc.

4
Connecting to the Internet
  • Dialup
  • Uses telephone lines
  • Requires telephone modem in computer
  • Slow by todays standards (56 Kbps, maximum)
  • Digital Subscriber Line (DSL)
  • Uses telephone lines for example, CenturyTel
  • User must be within 2 miles (or so) of switching
    station
  • Requires special DSL modem/router
  • Relatively fast typically 1 Mbyte/sec downloads

5
Connecting to the Internet (Cont.)
  • Cable
  • Connection via cable -- for example, Comcast
  • Requires special cable modem/router
  • Relatively fast typically, 1.5 Mbyte/sec
    downloads
  • Wireless
  • Connection via built-in or plug-in wireless
    adapters
  • Great for multi-computer home networks
  • Wireless hotspots available in public areas
    such as airports, hotels/motels, Starbucks,
    Panera, etc.
  • Speeds as high as 100Mbps

6
Connecting to the Internet (Cont.)
  • Tethered broadband modem
  • Thats what were using tonight
  • Modem is a Blackberry handheld device
  • Access to Internet is via wireless phone service
    in this case Sprint/Nextel
  • Requires special software installed on computer
  • Pretty fast, but not as fast as a good DSL or
    cable connection

7
Browsers Your Internet Interface
  • Most widely-used is Microsofts Internet Explorer
    (Version 7 is the latest)
  • IE bundled with MS operating systems such as
Vista and XP, and with applications like TurboTax
    and Quicken
  • Other browsers include FireFox, Netscape, and
    Opera
  • Browsers support the selection of homepages, and
remember favorite websites and browsing history

Shopping on the Internet
  • Garden chemicals like the very effective

order online and usually avoid Tennessee sales
    tax
  • Lets shop for Compass
