Background
  • All objects fall at a constant acceleration.
  • Some objects do not fall as fast as others,
    however, because of their drag. Drag is the
    friction on an object caused by air.
  • After a certain point, the falling object will
    not be able to go any faster. This is caused by
    drag, and the fastest an object can fall in the
    atmosphere is called Terminal Velocity.

Hypothesis
  • Our hypothesis is that the smaller the object the
    faster it will fall.
  • Our test is to drop foam spheres with the same
    masses, but different sizes, from the same
    altitude, and then time their decent.

Procedure
  • At first, we used a single, simple pulley loop
    anchoring the balloon and serving as a transport
    system to get our objects up to the airborne
    balloon. We later switched to a triangular pulley
    loop, with two anchor points, which proved to be
    much more convenient.

Conclusion
  • Our hypothesis was correct. The smaller the cross
    section of the sphere, the faster the sphere
    would fall.
  • Next year we could use objects with the same
    surface area but different mass.
