Job Training for Beaver County, Inc.
  • YouthCares

"Let every individual and institution now think
and act as a responsible trustee of Earth,
seeking choices in ecology, economics and ethics
that will provide a sustainable future, eliminate
pollution, poverty and violence, awaken the
wonder of life and foster peaceful progress in
the human adventure." John McConnell, founder
of International Earth Day
2
  • The Job Training for Beaver County, Inc.
  • YouthCares Computer Recycling
  • project funded in part through a grant from the
Sprout Foundation and in partnership with
    Southwest Corner, Westmoreland-Fayette and Three
Rivers Workforce Investment Boards and Goodwill
    Industries.

3
Our Goal
  • The goal of the YouthCares Computer Recycling
Project was to provide an opportunity for
    disadvantaged/at-risk youth to acquire invaluable
job skills/work habits through career readiness
curriculum and to learn civic responsibility and
    pollution prevention through the de-manufacturing
    and recycling of computers.

"You must be the change you wish to see in the
world." Mahatma Gandhi
4
Learning about Recycling
  • In todays high tech society it is less
expensive and much easier to buy a new and
improved electronic device, such as a computer,
than it is to repair the old one.
  • What happens to the old one?

"The ultimate test of man's conscience may be his
willingness to sacrifice something today for
future generations whose words of thanks will not
be heard." Gaylord Nelsonformer governor of
Wisconsin, co-founder of Earth Day

GOODWILL INDUSTRIESis making a difference.Our
Computer Recycling Center projects divert over 2
million pounds of electronic waste from area
landfills. De-manufacturing is an entire
process of collecting, disassembling, reusing,
refurbishing, recycling, and/or disposing
products that are obsolete or un-repairable.
10
Did you know
  • The Association of Electronic Recyclers estimates
that by 2010, 3 billion computers will be
    scrapped.
  • Currently only 10 of computers that become
    obsolete are recycled.
  • The US Department of Environmental Quality
estimates that over 500 million computer became
    obsolete between 1997 and 2007
  • 6.32 billion pounds of plastic
  • 1.58 billion pounds of lead
  • 632,000 pounds of mercury

11
  • A 2006 New York Times article stated that experts
estimate over 60 million computers exist in
landfills around large cities. They also stated
that over half of the computers found in
landfills come from the general public.
  • In 1997 37 of US households had a computer. By
    2003 that number was 63.
  • In a 2003 Consumer Reports study, 2 out of every
10 consumers reported throwing their desktop/or
    monitor in the trash.

12
Goodwill Industries De-Manufacturing facility
  • In 2005, Goodwill Industries (GII) received 27
million pounds of electronics, the equivalent of
    963,000 computers, via donations.
  • In addition to promoting the recycling of
    computer equipment, the de-manufacturing and
refurbishment facilities provide a work component
to Goodwill in terms of jobs and job training for
computer repair and refurbishment in the private
    sector.

13
  • They create jobs and train people how to fix
computers. There are a number of Goodwill
locations where they give computers to their
program participants and provide them with
    on-line career training.
  • Goodwill has approximately 40 computer recycling
    facilities nationwide, including Austin, Texas
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Sacramento and Santa
    Anna, California.

14
  • Taking a computer apart does not require
    sophisticated tools, but having tech-savvy
employees is essential as they can quickly
determine which parts require replacement and
which parts, such as video cards, can be sold as
    parts.

Career Readiness Component
  • The second part of our goal was to develop and
implement Career Readiness Curriculum, by helping
the youth to acquire and practice specific work
    readiness, and soft skills.
  • This was accomplished through classroom
    learning, internships and industrial tours.
  • These activities provided youth the
opportunity to practice and prepare for the world
of work by learning new skills and then applying
what they learned through hands-on experiences.
