  • My name is Stacey Abraham and my garden partner
    at our school is Kim Bojesen- she could not come
    today because she is pregnant. We both live in
    Kamloops.

School/Community- who are we?
  • Ralph Bell School is a little neighborhood
    school, nestled in the Valley, utilized by many
    community groups and teams for soccer, lacrosse,
    volleyball, cub scouts, etc.
  • The school is on Valleyview Drive, which is a
    main thoroughfare for drivers to get to work
    downtown therefore, the school is very visible
    to the community.
  • Out of about 150 students total, 43 are First
    Nations students, and over 80 are bus students.
    Many students live on the Kamloops Indian Band
    Reserve, and many live in different trailer
    courts. A few are from the neighbourhood.

OUR MISSION
  • To promote healthy living through nutrition,
    education, community partnerships, peer
    cooperation, enjoyment, and neighborhood
    beautification.

How to get started on a school garden
  • Read-magazines, newspapers, Internet, etc.
  • Research- other schools success stories, grants,
    feasibility of space/location.
  • Expenses-consider wood ( if you choose side-walls
    ), nails, stain, paint, landscaping fabric,
    shovel, hoe, rake, hand shovels, watering cans,
    seeds, plantsDONATIONS!
  • Funding- identify possible sources-
    alternativegifts.ca. PAC, Science Learning
    resources, evergreen.ca, fundrasing
  • Contacts/Communication- PAC, School Board, Staff,
    Seed/plant supplier.
  • Decision- making!!
  • Form a committee, start small and do it well!

Extension Ideas!
  • Art- sketch it, take seeds and glue for mosaic,
    photograph, watercolor, pastel, leaf prints,
    potato and squash printing.
  • Math- charts, graphs, questions.
  • Science- best seeds for citys seasons, best
    conditions for seeds, temperature, climate, water
    cycle, global warming.
  • Social Studies- mapping the planning stages of
    the garden ( competitions! ), mapping the gardens
    after they are built.
  • Writing- creative stories, poems, newspaper
    articles
