Progressivism

• Middle class reforms addressed problems that had
  contributed to the social upheaval of the 1890s.
• Journalist and writers exposed unsafe conditions
  in factories.
• Intellectuals questioned role of large
  corporations.
• Political reforms struggled to make government
  more responsive.
• These reform efforts formed the progressive
  movement which aimed to return control of the
  government to the people, restore economic
  opportunities, and correct injustices in American
  life.
