Title: Ethanol

1
Ethanol
  • An alternative fuel to replace petrol

2
What is it and can it be used in road transport?
  • Ethanol is an alcohol.
  • It is a renewable fuel.
  • It provides a high quality, low cost fuel for
    exceptional engine performance.
  • Ethanol makes the engine run more smoothly
because it doesnt leave sticky deposits.
  • Ethanol prevents winter problems by acting as a
    fuel line anti-freeze.

3
Effect on the Environment
  • Use of grain based ethanol, reduces greenhouse
gas emissions 35-46 compared to conventional
fuel and biomass ethanol provides an even greater
    reduction.
  • Ethanol reduces particular emissions, especially
fine particles that pose a threat to the health
of children, older people and those with
    respiratory ailments.
  • It contains 35 Oxygen resulting in a more
    complete fuel combustion, therefore reducing
    harmful exhaust emissions.

4
Is it safe?
  • It is just as safe as using ordinary petrol.
  • It is non-toxic, water soluble and quickly
    biodegradable.

5
Energy density and cost
  • Ethanol contains about 22,400 BTUs per litre.
  • The use of ethanol lowers the cost of petrol to
consumers and provides a large boost to the
economy because it extends supplies, providing an
    alternative to costly imported oil.

6
Can existing technology be readily adapted?
  • Most engines will need some modification to run
on pure ethanol but a 10 blend needs no
    modification.
  • When storing ethanol, water must be pumped from a
storage tank and a final filter must be added to
    the dispensing hose.
  • Special handling and storage are only needed in
    certain circumstances.
