Mary with the Child and Saints
Italian Renaissance
  • The word Renaissance means rebirth, and the
term is used to refer European history from the
14th to 17th centuries. The Renaissance bridges
the Middle Ages and the Early Modern age.
  • The Renaissance was a cultural movement based on
the revival of learning that revolutionized the
    Arts, Architecture, Science, Philosophy, and
    Technology.

This painting was done in 1510 and is one of
Titians earliest works. Titian is known for his
use of vibrant colors in his early works,
particularly reds. How is this painting different
from the Illuminated Manuscripts we looked at
last month?

Mary with the Child and Saints
  • In painting, the Italian Renaissance is marked
    by
  • Linear Perspective
  • This gives paintings the feeling of being a
window on a scene. There is clear demarcation
of what is near and far.
  • Perspective allows a more realistic
representation of art, which, in turn, inspired
    artists to paint more.
  • Humanism
  • Humanism emphasizes reason, scientific inquiry,
and human fulfillment in the natural world.
  • Artists became interested in painting scenes
beyond religious art. While religious art
remained popular, the subjects became more
    realistic and less idealized.
  • Artists began painting scenes of everyday people.
Portrait art became popular as well
  • Use of light and shadow
  • Overall desire to depict the beauty of Nature.

How does this painting follow the four
guidelines of Italian Renaissance painting
listed here?

Woman with Mirror
Titian
  • Tiziano Vecellio, better known as Titian, was
born around 1487 in Italy. He died in 1576.
  • When Titian was about 11 years old, his parents
sent him to Venice to find an apprenticeship with
a painter. Titian ended up working under the
leading artist in Venice, Giovanni Bellini.
  • Titian got his first independent commission in
1511. In 1516, he became the official painter to
the Republic of Venice which gave him recognition
as the greatest painter in Venice.
  • Throughout his career, Titian worked with color
and brushstrokes in ways that had never been done
before. His methods of working with oil paints
were copied by artists for generations.
  • Titian is known for his expressive brushwork that
made the paintings seem to come alive on the
    canvas.
  • Titian was recognized as an artistic genius even
in his own time, and that reputation has not been
questioned over the past 500 years.

Woman with Mirror
What is happening in this painting? What
colors do you notice? Where is your eye drawn to
look in the painting? How does Titians use of
color affect what you see in the
painting. Notice the womans hair color. Even
now, we say that hair is Titian if it has a
reddish brown color.

The Assumption of the Virgin
  • This painting, an altarpiece for a church in
Venice, established Titians reputation as a
    truly great artist.
  • This is the largest painting that Titian ever
painted. It is more than 22 feet high and over
    11 feet wide.
  • This painting depicts the Assumption of the
Virgin Mary. This story tells of Mary being
    raised into heaven.
  • This painting is composed of three orders (or
layers) at the bottom are the Apostles, stunned
by what is happening the middle is Mary
accompanied by angels above is God, calling Mary
    to him.
  • Notice the vibrant colors that Titian used here.
What are some of the colors that you see? How do
you think Titians use of color makes a difference
    in this painting?
  • What do you think of this painting? What do you
like about it? What dont you like?

Portrait of Cardinal Bembo
  • Titian was a sought after portrait artist. He
painted Kings and princes from all over Europe.
  • As Titan aged, he changed the way he used colors
and frequently painted with a more muted and
    monochromatic palette.
  • This is a portrait of a Cardinal, an important
priest in the Roman Catholic Church.
  • Just as priests usually wear black, Cardinals
usually wear red. Thats why Cardinal Bembo is
    wearing a red garment.
  • What do you notice about the use of colors in
    this painting?
  • Why do you think that Titian painted this on a
black background? Do you think the portrait
would have been more or less effective with the
    use of more colors?
  • What do you think that Titian was trying to
express about this Cardinal? What does the
Cardinals expression make you think of him?

8
Self Portrait
  • This is a self-portrait Titan painted in 1566
when Titian was around 80 years old.
  • Notice the brushstrokes in this painting. You
can really see them, and he wanted you to.
  • How does Titan use color in this painting?
  • Notice the almost monochromatic palette.
  • What do you think he thought of himself? What do
you think he wanted to portray in this portrait?
  • Notice his cloak and necklaces.

9
Polyptych of the Resurrection Virgin Annunciate
  • Titians influence both within the Renaissance
    and later has been profound.
  • Titian revolutionized oil painting with his free
and expressive brushwork as well as with the
    composition of his paintings.
  • His rich use of color influenced artists from
    Rembrandt to Rubens to Manet.
  • Titian has had a greater influence on 20th
century artists than any other Renaissance
    painter.
  • Think about that for a minute. A man who painted
500 years ago produced work that still makes a
    difference in art today.
