Nelsons Background

• Nelson Mandela was born in Transkei, South Africa
  in 1918. (This was the year of the great Bambino)
• His father Henry Mandela was the chief of the
  Tembu tribe.
• Nelson himself was educated at University College
  of Fort Hare.
• He joined the African National Congress (ANC) In
  1944.

Education

• Although it was quite hard in those days to get a
  good education, he went to University College of
  Fort Hare, but when he was expelled for
  protesting and making movements, he transferred
  to complete his regular college term at the
  University of South Africa.
• After he received his bachelors degree he
  continued to study law at the University of
  Witwatersrand.

Sent to Jail

• Nelson was sent to jail on more than one occasion
• One instance he was incarcerated for plotting to
  overthrow the government by force.
• His jail time lasted from 1964 to 1982 at Robben
  Island.
• In jail, surprisingly, his reputation grew. He
  was given the opportunity to be liberated if he
  changed his political position but he refused.
