Proposal Overview

• Preserve, archive, and convert ca.1000 of NOAA
  films on the agencys related topics (ocean,
  satellite visualizations, weather, fisheries
  etc.) to digital format.
• Current video formats, including VHS, BETACAM,
  and 35 mm film strips.
• Phase 1 transfer (convert) ca. 500 VHS tapes
  from analog to the specific digital formats (210
  VHS)
• 210 VHS tapes transferred into 1050 DVDs
• QA process continues
• Phase 2 transfer (convert) ca. 500 additional
  500 VHS, BETACAM, and 35 mm film strips to the
  specific digital formats.
• The converted digital video products are targeted
  for electronic use by the NOAA staff and the
  general public.

Processing

• Catalog all selected films and enter into
  NOAALINC (librarys online catalog) metadata
  information.
• Transfer (convert) VHS analog films to several
  digital video files
• DVD format for in-situ access (2 copies)
• AVI uncompressed - an archival digital master (1
  copy on Blue Ray DVD)
• MP4 and MOV formats for the Web friendly access
  (1 copy of each on DVD)
• Required format for future NOAA Video Library

Goal and Access

• Fully cataloged DVD sets will be available in
  library, for loan and possible future online
  access via NOAALINC and worldwide 24/7.
