2ICDO in brief
The International Civil Defence Organisation
(ICDO) is an intergovernmental organisation whose
objective is to contribute to the development by
States of structures ensuring the protection and
assistance of populations and safeguarding
property and the environment from natural or
man-made disasters.
The ICDO federates national structures with the
aim of favouring cooperation and mutual
solidarity between them.

World Civil Defence Day is celebrated every year
on 1st March. This Day commemorates the entry
into force in 1972 of the ICDO Constitution as an
inter-governmental organisation and has two main
purposes
- bringing to the attention of the public
world-wide the vital importance of Civil Defence,
- raising awareness of the preparedness for, and
prevention and self-protection measures in the
event of accidents or disasters
The World Days are an occasion for a variety of
national events symposium, conferences, radio
and television debates, open days, disaster
prevention and simulation exercises.
