Title: The Queensland gas story

1
The Queensland gas story
  • The CSG industry is rapidly expanding.
  • First sales of CSG in Queensland 1998.
  • CSG production grown to over 120PJ by May 2008.
  • There is more than enough CSG resources to
satisfy both domestic and export demand.

2
Coal Seam Gas Reserves
Since 2000 CSG reserves have grown from a few
hundred petajoules (PJ) to over 9,400PJ, and is
continuing to increase
Source Origin Energy
Production has also grown significantly to supply
more than 120PJ and over 20 per cent of eastern
Australias gas supply
3
Eastern Australia Natural Gas Demand
  • Source ABARE Australian National and State
    Energy Projections to 2029-30 (2007)

4
What is Coal Seam Gas?
  • CSG has a low carbon footprint
  • Methane exists within coal
  • Australian CSG is typically 98 methane, lt2
    inert gas, no liquids
  • Target CSG zones are 200m 1,000m
  • Permeability and gas content to be commercial
  • Production process is simply dehydration and
    compression
