order to communicate efficiently and
meaningfully, students should know about
  • Role expectations that affect how people speak
    and behave.
  • the culturally conditioned images people have in
    mind.
  • Interrelated cultural patterns which support
    needs satisfaction.
  • Curiosity about the target culture and empathy
    towards its people raise students interest in
    learning that language.

  • SITUATION
  • Mr. and Mrs. Smith have five children between
    the ages 10 and 20. Mr. Smiths mother has lived
    in the same town as the Smiths all of their
    lives. Mr. Smiths father died several years
    before. Mr. Smiths mother had an accident and
    breaks her hip. She needs to have care everyday.
    The Smiths have a very small home but they could
    host the grand mother if some of the children
    double up in the bedrooms.
  • Task
  • In group discuss what should the Smiths do and
    why basing your answer on your cultures beliefs
    and values. Report to other groups your ideas.

    visit. Give your partners cues to guess what it

What can these activities about culture bring to
our students ?
  • Demonstrate Curiosity and empathy towards people
    of the target culture encourages them to learn
    that language
  • Understand role expectations, social needs and
    images evoked while interacting.

    develop global understanding and well being of
    any country.
