  • COE's Center for Educational Research and Policy
    Studies (CERPS) has joined 32 other leading
    university education research centers from 23
    different states as a new member of the Education
    Policy Alliance (EPA).
  • The alliance membership includes centers located
    at many of the country's top universities,
    including Stanford, Columbia and the University
    of Pennsylvania. This national consortium
    promotes collaborative research efforts across
    its member centers, and is committed to the
    dissemination of high-quality research findings.

  • This research is important as debates on dual
    language acquisition for minorities take place
    around the country, and also proves the
    importance of policies in early childhood
    education to reduce initial disparities which are
    systematically carried on.

  • What you need, Eddie, is another remedial reading
    class A semiotic analysis of representations of
    literacy in popular school film
  • Grounded in research traditions of textual
    analysis and cultural studies, this study
    examines representations of literacy and literacy
    pedagogy in fifteen films about school made in
    the 1930s to present day. Films were selected for
    inclusion based on five criteria setting of the
    film in a K-12 school, teacher as a central
    character of the film, a school film with a
    serious message, a film that includes at least
    one literary event, and a film that is available
    for rent.

  • Robert Petrone (Michigan State University)
  • Facilitating failure An analysis of
    skateboarding, schooling and success
  • This presentation will discuss the findings of an
    18-month ethnographic research study that
    examined the language, literacy and learning
    practices found at a skateboard park inhabited by
    working-class young men who underachieve
    academically. Drawing on sociocultural
    conceptions of literacy and learning, this
    presentation highlights the textual practices and
    perspectives of this group of working-class young
    men in order to help rethink the ways
    working-class youth are understood, educated, and
    advocated for/with.

College of Education a Leader in Math/Science
Education Initiative
  • With matching funds provided by the Florida
    Legislature, FSU will have a total of
    approximately 5.15 million to launch the
    program, named FSU-Teach.
  • FSU-Teach will be administered by Joseph Travis,
    dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and
    Marcy P. Driscoll, dean of the College of
    Education.

  • FSU will recruit more math and science majors
    into the teaching profession.
  • "To flourish in the 21st century, the United
    States must continue to generate intellectual
    capital that can drive the research and
    development activities that fuel our economic
    engine," T.K. Wetherell said. "This is dependent
    on the next generation of scientists. At Florida
    State University, we are honored to have been
    selected to play such an important role in
    helping to develop those scientists."

  • Dr. Carol Connor (CERDS/FCRR) received the 2007
    President's Early Career Award in Science and
    Engineering (PECASE) on November 1 in Washington
    DC.
  • Selection for this annual award is based on the
    combination of innovative research at the
    frontiers of science and technology and community
    service demonstrated through scientific
    leadership and community outreach.

  • Dr. Susan Losh participated in the International
    Indicators of Science and the public workshop at
    the Royal Society (London, UK).
  • Dr. Losh's presentation was titled Age,
    Generation and Changes in American Public

  • FSU Dialogues sponsored by Congress of Graduate
    Students Office of the Dean of Graduate Studies
  • Florida State University's Congress of Graduate
    Students and Office of Graduate Studies invite
    applications for the first FSU Dialogues
    Conference that will take place in the Spring of
    2008.
  • Dialogues is designed to recognize
    interdisciplinary research by graduate students
    and promote its recognition internationally. 
    Each year the interdisciplinary focus of the
    conference will change.

    general condition of the mind and body.

International Dissertation Semester Research
Fellowship
  • The Office of Graduate Studies is pleased to
    announce the International Dissertation Semester
    Research Fellowship.  
  • The new fellowship program is for advanced
    doctoral students to help facilitate research and
    the timely completion of their doctoral degree
    that requires extended research-time abroad. 
  • Eligible graduate students will be able to access
    the application and criteria information on the
    OGS website in a few weeks.  
  • The deadline for submission of the folders to the
    Office of Graduate Studies is January 18, 2008.

Personal Finance Study An examination of
personal finance activities leading to wealth
accumulation.
  • Dr. David Eccles and his fellow researchers are
    in need of households to take part in a pilot
    study looking at activities related to personal
    finance. This study is being financed by a grant
    through the Financial Industrys Regulatory
    Authority Investor Education Foundation.
  • The data collected will be used to provide
    personal finance interventions. They are looking
    for married couples in their 50s to participate.

    high school and college students and other adults
    who are college-bound or entering the work force
    and may be experiencing difficulties related to a
    learning disability or Attention Deficit

    client coaching in the areas of test-performance
    anxiety reduction, academic consultation and
    study skills.

Night Nole
  • During the fall, Night Nole provides students
    with a safe ride home from the Tennessee Strip
    and other late-night venues.
  • The SGA funds this no-fare transit service
    through a contract with Tallahassee. The route is
    within a short walking distance of many apartment
    complexes where students live.
