Title: Marriage, Separation, and Remarriage
1Marriage, Separation, and Remarriage
Part Two
2Marriage
- Marriage is
- A God-instituted Relationship
- God established and defined marriage when He
brought one woman for the man (Gen. 222). - A Moral Condition
- Marriage is contrasted with fornicators and
adulterers (Heb. 134). To identify sexual
morality, one must clearly define marriage. - A Civil Condition
- Each marriage must comply with civil law
(I Pet. 2, Rom. 13,Titus 3, Jude 1). - A Standard for All
3Marriage Is A Standard for All
- Gods sexual moral code is for all people.
4- CHRISTS TEACHINGS ON MARRIAGE COVERED
- During the Law of Moses
- (Mat 519 KJV) Whosoever therefore shall break
one of these least commandments, and shall teach
men so -
- (Mat 532 KJV) But I say unto you, That
whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the
cause of fornication, causeth her to commit
adultery and whosoever shall marry her that is
divorced committeth adultery. - (Mat 724 KJV) Therefore whosoever heareth
these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will
liken him unto a wise man, which built his house
upon a rock
5- CHRISTS TEACHINGS ON MARRIAGE COVERED (Contd)
- Church Era
- (Luke 1616-18 KJV) the kingdom of God is
preached, . - Whosoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth
another, committeth adultery and whosoever
marrieth her that is put away from her husband
committeth adultery. - Before the Law of Moses
- (Mat 198-9 NKJV) but from the beginning it
was not so. And I say to you, whoever divorces
his wife, except for sexual immorality, and
marries another, commits adultery and whoever
marries her who is divorced commits adultery.
6Marriage Is A Set of Obligations
- Husbands and wives have many mutual
responsibilitiesthose of one human to another. - A Christian husband or wife has additional
responsibilities. - Those of one Christian to another Christian, or
- Those of a Christian to a non-Christian.
- For example Honesty, kindness, mercy, love,
gentleness, generosity, faithfulness,
longsuffering, forgiveness
7Marriage Is A Set of Obligations (Contd)
- Husbands have specific responsibilities to wives.
- To love them. (Col. 319, Eph. 525-33)
- To give honor to them. (I Pet. 37)
- To dwell with them (I Pet. 37, I Cor. 711)
and be available for a sexual relationship. (I
Cor. 73-5)
8Marriage Is A Set of Obligations (Contd)
- Husbands have specific responsibilities to wives.
(Contd) - To provide for his own. (Gen. 319, I Tim. 58)
- To rule over and be the head of his wife.
(I Cor. 113, Gen. 316) - To rule his whole household. (I Tim. 34, 12
Gen. 1819)
9Marriage Is A Set of Obligations (Contd)
- Wives have specific responsibilities to husbands.
- To be a companion and helper suitable for man.
(Gen. 218-24 NASB) - To love her husband. (Titus 24)
- To be living with (not depart from or leave)
her husband and available for a sexual
relationship. (I Cor. 73-5, 10) - To manage the house. (I Tim. 514)
10Marriage Is A Set of Obligations (Contd)
- Wives have specific responsibilities to husbands.
(Contd) - To accept her husband as her head (Eph. 523)
and not exercise authority over a man. (I
Tim. 212) - To be obedient to her husband and accept his
rule over her. (Titus 25, Gen. 316) - To be submissive to her husband (I Pet. 31,
5-6) to submit to him as to the Lord. (Eph.
522, Col. 318) - To respect her husband. (Eph. 533)
11Marriage Is A Set of Obligations (Contd)
- Note that the reasons given for the subjection of
woman to man are for all ages (not related to
customs) - Man was created first (I Tim. 213), as the
image and glory of God. - Woman was created from man as the glory of man.
(I Cor. 117-8) - Woman was created for the man. (I Cor. 119-10)
- The woman was deceived, not the man. (I Tim.
213-14, I Cor. 113)
12Marriage
Marriage is One of the very good things that God
created in the beginning. (Gen. 131)
- Marriage Is
- A God-instituted Relationship
- A Moral Condition
- A Civil Condition
- A Standard for All
- A Set of Obligations
- Marriage Is Not
13Marriage Is Not Always Moral (Contd)
- Some marriages are immoral.
- Paul said
- (Rom 73 NKJV) So then if, while her husband
lives, she marries another man, she will be
called an adulteress but if her husband dies,
she is free from that law, so that she is no
adulteress, though she has married another man. - Paul describes a woman who has married another
man. - But, Paul says she is an adulteress (sexually
immoral).
14Marriage Is Not Always Moral (Contd)
- Some marriages are immoral. (Contd)
- Jesus said
- (Mat 199 NKJV) And I say to you, whoever
divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality,
and marries another, commits adultery and
whoever marries her who is divorced commits
adultery. - Jesus describes a person who divorces and then
marries again. - But, Jesus says that this person who marries
again is guilty of adultery (sexual immorality).
Note Even a first marriage can be adultery if
the person he/she marries is not a legitimate
candidate for remarriage.
15Marriage Is Not Always Moral
- Unmarried is not always free to marry again.
- Paul said that this person who became unmarried
must remain unmarried or be reconciled to her
husband. - (1 Cor 710-11 NKJV) But even if she does
depart, let her remain unmarried or be reconciled
to her husband.
One can become unmarried without becoming
eligible for remarriagebecause for some
remarriage is immoral.
16Marriage Is Not Slavery
- Marriage has many strong mutual obligations, but
marriage is not slavery. - Paul says that if a spouse departs, the other is
not in slavery (bondage). - (1 Cor 715 KJV) But if the unbelieving depart,
let him depart. A brother or a sister is not
under bondage in such cases but God hath called
us to peace. - The concept of slavery is translated as
bondagethe word slave/slavery is not used
in KJV or ASV NT (but once, Rev. 1813).
17Marriage Is Not Slavery (Contd)
- In NT, slavery is called bondage (as in I
Cor. 715). - The Greek root verb is doulovw which means to
enslave. (Logos Greek Lemma) - (Acts 76 KJV) his seed should sojourn in a
strange land and that they should bring them
into bondage would be enslaved, NASB, and
entreat them evil four hundred years. - The associate Greek root noun is doulo" which
means a slave. (Logos Greek Lemma) - (Gal 328 KJV) There is neither Jew nor Greek,
there is neither bond nor free, there is neither
male nor female for ye are all one in Christ
Jesus. Also see bond or/nor free in Eph.
68 and Col. 311.
18Marriage Is Not Slavery (Contd)
- A different Greek word is used for being bound
in marriage (as in I Cor. 727, 39). - The Greek root word is devw which means to tie,
bind. (Logos Greek Lemma) - This meaning is seen clearly in
- (Mark 114 KJV) And they went their way, and
found the colt tied by the door without in a
place where two ways met and they loose him.
19Marriage Is Not Slavery (Contd)
- A different Greek word is used for being bound
in marriage (as in I Cor. 727, 39). (Contd) - This is the way Paul used the wordto be tied
to a husband or wife. - (Rom 72 NKJV) For the woman who has a husband
is bound by the law to her husband as long as he
lives. - (1 Cor 727 KJV) Art thou bound unto a wife?
seek not to be loosed. - (1 Cor 739 NKJV) A wife is bound by law as
long as her husband lives
20Marriage Is Not Slavery (Contd)
- Paul makes a distinction in I Cor. 7 by his use
of two different Greek words. - To refer to marriage.
- (1 Cor 739 NKJV) A wife is bound to tie,
bind by law as long as her husband lives . - To refer to slavery
- (1 Cor 715 KJV) But if the unbelieving depart,
let him depart. A brother or a sister is not
under bondage a slave in such cases - Used over 130 times never once for marriage.
- The marriage is a tie, but it is not slavery.
21Marriage Is Not Slavery (Contd)
- The phrase not under bondage (I Cor. 715)
means that departure of the spouse releases a
person from spousal duties, but it does not sever
the tie of marriage. - Recall Even unmarried would not necessarily be
free to marry (1 Cor 711). - The Scriptures indicated when remarriage is
allowed (Matt. 199, Matt. 532, Rom. 72-3).
22Marriage
- Marriage is
- Marriage is not
- Always Moral
- Slavery
23Marriage
- Definition Marriage is an institution
- ordained of God for the honor and happiness of
mankind, - in which one man and one woman enter into a
bodily and spiritual union, - pledging each to the other mutual love, honor,
fidelity, sympathy, forbearance, and comradeship,
- such as should assure an unbroken continuance of
their wedlock so long as both shall live. - Marriage, Divorce, and Remarriage, H. Leo Boles
