Purpose

• Capsular tension rings (CTRs) are used in zonular
  dehiscence in cases with
• Trauma
• Pseudoexfoliation
• Marfan syndrome, homocystinuria
• Filtration surgery
• Vitrectomised eyes with silicone use
• In mild to moderate zonular dialysis lt 4 clock
  hours
• Aim
• To evaluate the characteristics and results of
  cases who were implanted with CTRs

Methods

• Retrospective study
• 41 eyes of 41 patients
• Age mean 69.2 11.0 years
• range 39 to 90 years
• Patients characteristics
• Visual outcomes
• Intraocular pressures
• Complications
• were analyzed
• Statistical analysis SPSS 10.0
• Paired t-test

• CTR implantation
• 33 eyes following cortex aspiration
• 8 eyes following hydrodissection

Results

• In all 41 eyes CTRs were successfully implanted
  in the bag
• Preoperative diagnoses
• pseudoexfoliation (n19)
• zonular dehiscence (n7)
• zonular dialysis (n7)
• trauma (n5)
• uveitis (n3)
• Intraoperative complications none

• VA increased significantly

• All had glaucoma preoperatively
• IOP controllable with antiglaucomatous medication

• Anterior capsular contraction
• Posterior capsular opacification - 3 eyes (7.3)

Conclusion

• CTRs
• Decreases complications during surgery
• Increases in-the-bag implantation rates of IOLs
• Supports the bag
• Thereby keeping the centralization of the IOL

Conclusion

• Our study supports previous studies
• CTRs are safe during phacoemulsification surgery
• In selected cases with zonular dehiscence or
  dialysis capsular tension rings can be used in
  order to support the zonules
