• 10.01- Explain the distinction between personal
  and civics responsibilities and the tensions that
  may arise between them.
• 10.02- Develop, defend, and evaluate positions on
  issues regarding diversity in American life.

A. Civic Responsibilities

• 1. Community activism -Used on behalf of a cause
  (civil rights, neighborhood watch)
• 2. Tolerance -Respecting others differences
• 3. Collaboration -Citizens working together to
  resolve conflicts
• 4. Fiscal responsibility Paying taxes to fund
  the govt.
• 5. Voting rights -How the governed gives their
  consent to the govt
• 6. Community service -Volunteering to help others
• 7. Legal v Moral Responsibilities
• a) Legal -Obey the laws
• b) Moral -Follow ethical principles

B. Diversity in America

• E Pluribus Unum from many, one
• Melting Pot Theory- abandon your cultural
  differences and assimilate into the US society
• Tossed Salad Theory- US benefits when people keep
  their cultural identities.
• Social Problems
• Racism- viewing people negatively and
  discriminating against them because of their
  ethnic race
• Sexism- unfair treatment based on gender
• Ageism- unfair treatment based on age (usually
  elderly)
• Bias- feelings for or against something (can be
  based on stereotypes of physical appearance)
