Title: MAPS
1MAPS GLOBES
2NCSCOS OBJECTIVES
- 4.01 Distinguish between various types of maps
and globes. - 4.02 Use appropriate source maps to locate
communities.
3How can we locate someone?
To locate someone we can use written or verbal
directions but if we wanted to actually see where
we are trying to go we could use a map or a globe.
4Location
- The location of a place is where the place is. To
describe the location of something you can use
words such as above, next to, beside, and across
from.
5What is a MAP?
- A map is a drawing that shows where places are.
They help you find locations using symbols or
pictures that represent the real place.
6What can we see on a map?
- Depending on the type of map, you can see many
places. For example, if you are looking at a map
of the United States, you may see many states.
7What can we see on a map?
- If you are looking at a map of a particular
state, you will be able to see cities. For
example, in this map of North Carolina, you will
find Gastonia.
8What can we see on a map?
- Also, if we take a look at a city map, we would
be able to see streets, schools, the public
library, restaurants, malls, and other office
buildings.
9What can we see on a map?
- There is also a World Map. On a world map, you
can see the entire world drawn out on a piece of
paper. For example, you can find North America,
the continent in which we live on a world map.
10On a map..
This is Mexicos border with the United States.
This is Texas border within the United States.
- On a map, there are lines called borders that
separate countries and states. In the pictures,
you will see the country of Mexico against the
United States border and the state of Texas
border within the United States.
11Parts of a map
- As we have learned, maps contain symbols that
help you find places. They also have a map key
that lists the symbols used on a map. It shows
you what they mean.
12Parts of a map
- A compass is a tool that shows direction on a
map. It helps you to figure out whether you are
traveling north, south, east, or west.
13Parts of a map
- A map shows places smaller than they really are
but it can show true distance using a map scale.
A map scale is like a ruler. It is used to
measure distance.
14What is a globe?
- A globe is a model of the Earth. The green and
brown parts represent the land and the blue
represents the water.
15What can we see on a globe?
- Like a map, a globe shows places on Earth. You
can see the 7 continents and the 5 oceans. It
shows every part of the Earth at one time!
16What do we see on a globe?
- The globe also has a compass, but it is used in
comparison to the poles. You may have heard of
the North Pole. It is nothing but the northern
half of the world. There is a North Pole and a
South Pole.
17What do we see on a globe?
- Globes also have a map key and map scale. A globe
is just a map of the whole Earth.
18What is the difference between a map and a globe?
- A map is a drawing that shows where places are.
It is flat and drawn on a piece of paper. - and
- A globe is a model of the Earth. Globes also
show where places are. It is a sphere because it
represents Earth and Earth is round.
19What have we learned?
- Describe a map.
- How is a map like a globe?
- Describe a globe.
- What is a map key?
- What is the map scale used for?
- What are borders?
- What is the job of a compass?
20Lets use what weve learned!
- Lets look at our globe and see if we can locate
and describe where the United States is in
relation to Africa. - Now, lets look at our United States map and use
it to locate and describe where California is in
relation to North Carolina. - Last, lets look at a map of Gastonia and see if
you can find our school.
