• The countries that were involved in the East
  Timor genocide were Indonesia (of course), the
  United Nations and Portugal. At the time, East
  Timor was governed by Portugal. East Timor was a
  non-self governing territory.

• A civil war broke out between those who favored
  independence and those who advocated integration
  with Indonesia

When was the time period and how long did it last?

• The Indonesian military invaded for the first
  time in 1975. Within the first year, 100,000 East
  Timorese were killed. Later, in the 1980s, all
  hope seemed lost.

Why did the conflict begin? How did it begin?

• Portugal wanted a monarchy and wanted to rule
  East Timor. East Timor, not wanting to be ruled,
  sought out support from the UN.

What conditions allowed for that genocide to
occur?

• Even though Portugal was in control of East
  Timor, there was no monarchy. East Timor had no
  direct leader. In result of that, East Timor
  became vulnerable. Portugal offered to form a
  monarchy, but East Timor refused.

How could the conditions have been different to
prevent the genocide?

• East Timor could have had a democracy and a
  leader within their territory so Portugal would
  not have been tempted to invade. Indonesia could
  have stepped in as well.

What happened in the genocide?

• 200,000 lives have been taken since the
  Indonesian military invaded. There was a massacre
  called the Santa Cruz Massacre where 101 people
  were killed in 1991.

Who was the leader responsible for the conflict?

• In April of 1974, a cartel of democratic generals
  overthrew the Portuguese dictator, Macrelo
  Caetano in Lisbon.

How did it end and how is the country today?

• To end this conflict, 600,000 East Timorese fled
  the country. Today, East Timor is completely
  independent.
