The Parable of the Householder
  • (Matthew 1351-52)

3
The parable of the householder
  • And He said to them, Therefore every scribe who
has become a disciple of the kingdom of heaven is
like a head of a household, who brings forth out
of his treasure things new and old. (Matthew
    1351-52)

4
The parable of the householder
  • And He said to them, Therefore every scribe who
has become a disciple of the kingdom of heaven is
like a head of a household, who brings forth out
of his treasure things new and old. (Matthew
    1351-52)

5
Every scribe
  • Copyists of the Scriptures
  • People who had the greatest mastery of the OT
    revelation of God

6
The parable of the householder
  • And He said to them, Therefore every scribe who
has become a disciple of the kingdom of heaven is
like a head of a household, who brings forth out
of his treasure things new and old. (Matthew
    1351-52)

7
Who has become a disciple of the kingdom of
heaven
  • Therefore, behold, I am sending you prophets and
wise men and scribes some of them you will kill
and crucify, and some of them you will scourge in
your synagogues, and persecute from city to city,
    (Matthew 2334)

8
Who has become a disciple of the kingdom of
heaven
  • In the same way the chief priests also, along
with the scribes and elders, were mocking Him,
and saying, He saved others He cannot save
Himself. He is the King of Israel let Him now
come down from the cross, and we shall believe in
    Him. (Matthew 2741-42)

9
The parable of the householder
  • And He said to them, Therefore every scribe who
has become a disciple of the kingdom of heaven is
like a head of a household, who brings forth out
of his treasure things new and old. (Matthew
    1351-52)

10
Is like a head of a household
  • The picture is that of a householder paying out
old and new coins kept in a strongbox hidden in
his home (Keener, OT Background Commentary).
  • Therefore the bringing forth referred to here by
Jesus is no rummage-sale unloading of junk
rather it is a displaying of rare treasures for
the fascination of the castle guests (Robert F.
Capon, The Parables of the Kingdom, 166).

11
But what is the message?
12
What treasure did the scribe possess before
becoming a disciple?
  • The Blessings of Gods OT Revelation in the
    Prophets!

13
  • The law of Thy mouth is better to me than
thousands of gold and silver pieces. (Psalm
    11972)
  • They are more desirable than gold, yes, than much
fine gold sweeter also than honey and the
drippings of the honeycomb. (Psalm 1910)

14
What treasure did the scribe possess after
becoming a disciple?
  • The Blessings of Gods NT Revelation in Christ!

15
  • To me, the very least of all saints, this grace
was given, to preach to the Gentiles the
unfathomable riches of Christ, (Ephesians 38)
  • in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom
    and knowledge. (Colossians 23)

16
Important lessons
  • Understanding the mysteries of the kingdom
(Gods NT revelation) is essential to being an
effective disciple of Jesus and teacher of the
    gospel.

17
Important lessons
  • Even the most unlikely candidate for the gospel
can be converted if his heart is right!

18
Important lessons
  • The NT disciple does not abandon the treasure of
    OT revelation.

19
  • All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable
for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for
training in righteousness that the man of God
may be adequate, equipped for every good work. (2
    Timothy 316-17)
  • For whatever was written in earlier times was
written for our instruction, that through
perseverance and the encouragement of the
Scriptures we might have hope. (Romans 154)

20
  • Now these things happened to them as an example,
and they were written for our instruction, upon
whom the ends of the ages have come. (1
    Corinthians 1011)

21
Important lessons
  • The NT disciple uses the new revelation of the
gospel to understand the nature of OT promises.

22
Important lessons
  • The treasures of Gods revelation are not to be
hidden away but made known to others.

23
  • And according to Pauls custom, he went to them,
and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from
the Scriptures, explaining and giving evidence
that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from
the dead, and saying, This Jesus whom I am
proclaiming to you is the Christ. (Acts 172-3)

24
The best thing you have in your home to display
is not physical but spiritual. It is the word of
God, properly understood and lived before men.
To bring forth that treasure for all to see is to
enrich everyone around you!
