Averetts PC Labs
  • Computer LabsAverett's eight campus computer
    labs are equipped with the latest hardware and
    software technologies. Labs are located in these
    campus locations to provide easy access for
    students
  • Main 118

  • Wireless ComputingAverett University has the
    latest wireless computing technology available.
    Wireless access is available to registered users
    in the following locations
  • Blount library
  • Danville Hall (for laptops in classroom 9B only)

Acceptable Use Policy
  • You must have a current and up-to-date Anti-Virus
    program.
  • You should name your computer by your building
    and room number. (Ex. Commons211A or Fugate206)
  • Basically, you cannot use Averett resources to do
    anything illegal or for profit.
  • You may use the network for personal use, but not
    in such a way that it takes resources (storage,
    bandwidth) from academic uses.
  • Academic uses receive first priority in labs and
    in competition for resources.

  • WebMail is a Free web-based mail client for
    students of Averett
  • BlackBoard is a web-based teaching tool used by
    professors which allows you access to tests,
    grades, syllabi and more online.
  • Bulletin Boards On the front page, click on
    WebBoard for forum style discussions for
    students, as well as announcement and news from
    Residence Life.

Logging on to Web Mail
  • Click on the WebMail link from www.averett.edu.
  • Enter your username and password
  • your password will show as asterisks.
  • Click on Log in button
  • pressing Enter will not work.

  • Averetts Web Mail operates very much like Yahoo
    and Hotmail

    purge deleted messages are found along the top

  • Website for class resources online.
  • Click on Blackboard link at the bottom of the
    Averett homepage,
  • Or point your browser to averett.blackboard.com
  • note, .com, not .edu!

  • Syllabi, tests, assignments, grades and more may

  • The first time you visit Blackboard you will
    login as a New User. After that you will login
    in as an Existing User

Web Bulletin Boards
  • Averett Web Student Bulletin Board system
    contains news, announcements, and a student forum
    in which to address problems and resolutions with
    students and administrators at Averett.
  • A Weather Alert Bulletin Board is available to
    notify you of school closings and delayed
    schedules due to inclement weather.

  • To use the Bulletin Boards, click on the
    Bulleting Board link at the bottom of Averetts
    home page.
  • Your Bulletin Board User Name and Password is the
    same as your webmail.

    use for Email and click OK

  • New messages are displayed along the left
  • Expand messages by clicking on the plus sign to
    the left of each displayed region.
  • Click on the links on the left to read messages
  • Messages will display in the right hand frame.

    Post Button at the top left
  • Mark messages as Read by clicking on the mark
    as read button.
  • Click on the Search button to search messages
    by keyword within topic and/or subject

  • Links include how tos, FAQs, helpful downloads,

Connecting to the Internet
  • Internet access for web browsing email is
    available free in computer labs.
  • Cannot install file sharing programs or most
    other programs
  • Policy restricts most changes to the desktop
  • Unless in the Apartments or Fugate, you will have
    to pay for a modem connection for your personal
    computer.
  • Make sure you place a 9, in front of the number
    in order to dial your internet service provider.
  • If you do not already have a dial up account, one
    may be purchased through the school. If you wish
    to do this you must see Ms. Rose Holley on Main
    Hall outside the Business Office.

  • Students in dorms can sign up for a dial-up
    account through Gamewood
  • College has arranged for discount with Gamewood
    Data Systems, a local company
  • 72 per trimester (4 months)
  • Can suspend during summer
  • AOL, Earthlink, Juno, Net Zero, and Toast.net are
    some national providers with local numbers
  • Various local ISPs

Student Tools CD
  • Contains free software for Windows and
    installation guides for student usage. These
    tools can also be found on our website.
  • Anti-Virus AVG7 and several removal tools for
    specific viruses.
  • Mail Client Thunder Bird
  • Web Browser Mozilla FireFox
  • Spyware Removal Ad-aware SE, SpyBot, Microsoft
    Antispyware

  • Firewall ZoneAlarm
  • Office Suite OpenOffice
  • Can be used as an alternative to Microsoft
    Office, but Microsoft Office is recommended
  • Make sure to save word documents in .doc or .rtf
    form and spreadsheets in .xls if you wish to edit
    them in the labs using Microsoft Office.

Other Office Applications
  • StarOffice and OpenOffice
  • Be sure to save in MS Word format or .rtf
    format
  • WordPerfect
  • Save as .rtf
  • Spreadsheets in other programs likely will not
    open in Excel without intervention of IT
    department

Office on the Macintosh
  • For best results, always use PC-formatted disks.
    Both computers can read them.
  • For Microsoft Word on the Mac, be sure to put a
    .doc on the end of the file name
  • Allows PCs to recognize the file as a Word
    document.
  • Likewise, put .xls on the end of an Excel
    spreadsheet and .ppt on the end of PowerPoint
    slides.
  • PowerPoint compatibility is problematic between
    Mac and PC.

Saving Files
  • Save your work on multiple floppy disks or use a
    jump drive!
  • Heavily used floppies may fail before the end of
    a semester.
  • Another option is to e-mail your work to yourself
    from the lab machine.
  • Files saved on a lab hard drive may be erased
    without warning by another user or the staff.
  • You may save files to the desktop temporarily,
    but please erase them when you are finished.

  • The Computer Center Helpdesk is available to
    Averett University faculty, staff and
    administration and currently enrolled students
    (student support is on a limited basis). In order
    for all requests to be logged and serviced in the
    most efficient manner, please contact the
    Computer Center Helpdesk (ext. 5720) or submit
    your request via Web Support Form otherwise the
    response to your request may delayed.
