  • Host-based requires you to telnet to host, check
    mail using server-based program
  • RITVAX and VAX EMAIL program

  • Local mail also called POP mail

  • Allows local PC to connect to server, download
    mail

  • Pros
  • Can be checked from any workstation
  • Provides consistent interface
  • Easy to support, document

  • Limited feature set
  • Less intuitive interface
  • More difficult to print, save messages

  • Choice of interfaces and programs
  • Richer feature set
  • Cons
  • Mail is stored on whatever computer youre

  • Requires local storage space for messages
  • Slow connections can take a long time to download
