Title: Contemplating Christ Through the Eyes of Mary
1Contemplating Christ Through the Eyes of
Mary The Mysteries of the Rosary
2The Rosary
- October is the month of the Rosary
- May is the month of Mary
- History
- Prior to the 9th century, it was common for monks
to pray the 150 Psalms of the Bible - However, the general population could not read,
so it was hard for laymen to participate in this
form of prayer - Around 800 AD, it was suggested to pray 150 Our
Fathers as a replacement for the 150 Psalms - People carried around pebbles or ropes with 150
knots to keep track of their prayers
3The Rosary cont
- Another group began combining the Hail Mary
prayer with the Our Fathers - It is believed that in the 13th century, Our Lady
gave St. Dominic the Rosary in a more structured
form - She told him to preach the rosary to get rid of
all the errors of that time - Contains mysteries that help us meditate on the
life of Christ - Later in the 15th century, the Dominican, Alain
of Roche, structured the rosary to the three
groups of mysteries. - In 2003, Pope John Paul II added the Luminous
Mysteries to close the gap in our meditation on
the life of Christ - These new mysteries are meant to help us ponder
Christs public ministry through the eyes of His
Mother
