3
Islamic Principles on Halaal Haraam
  • The basic asl (principle, foundation) is the
    permissibility of things
  • Prohibition and making lawful is the domain of
    the Creator (Allah)
  • Prohibiting the halaal and making lawful the
    haraam is equivalent to Shirk
  • Prohibition is due to impurity or harmfulness
    (known or unknown)
  • What is halaal is sufficient, what is haraam is
    superfluous
  • Anything conducive to haraam is haraam
  • False representation of haraam as halaal is
    prohibited
  • Good intentions do not make the haraam acceptable
  • What is doubtful is to be avoided
  • What is haraam is prohibited for everyone
  • Necessity dictates exceptions

4
Basic Principles
  • The sphere of the prohibited is very small
    compared to what is permissible.
  • The prophet (PBUH) said The halaal is that
which Allah (SWT) has made lawful in his book and
the haraam is that which he has forbidden and
that concerning which he is silent, He (SWT) has
    permitted as favor for you
  • The Prophet (PBUH) referred to the general
criterion to determine halaal and haraam. Thus is
it sufficient to know what is haraam since what
is not included in the realm of haraam, is
    considered pure and lawful.
  • This principle applies to objects (e.g. food
drink) as well human actions and behavior which
hare not related to acts of worship.

5
Food and Drink
  • Allah (SWT) addresses all humanity, saying O
mankind, eat of what is permissible and good on
earth, and do not follow the footsteps of Satan,
truly he is an open adversary to you.
    (al-Baqara, 168)
  • O ye who believe! Eat of the good things that We
have provided for you, and be grateful to Allah,
if it is Him ye worship. He hath only forbidden
you dead meat, and blood, and the flesh of swine,
and that on which any other name hath been
invoked besides that of Allah. But if one is
forced by necessity, neither craving (it), nor
transgressing due limits,- there is no sin on
him, for Allah is Oft-forgiving Most Merciful.
    (al-Baqara, 172-173)

Food and Drink - Meats
  • Allah (SWT) explains in the Quran the no food is
Haraam except the four kinds mentioned in the
verse below, the same four are mentioned in some
greater details in various places in the Quran.
  • Say "I do not find in what is revealed to me
anything (meat) forbidden to be eaten by one who
wishes to eat it, unless it be the flesh of that
which is dead, or flowing blood, or the flesh of
swine, for it is an abomination, or what is
impious, (meat) on which a name has been invoked,
other than Allahs. But (even so), if a person is
forced by necessity, without wilful disobedience,
nor transgressing due limits, thy Lord is
    Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful. (al-anam 145)
  • Seafood is exempted fish, whales etc, the
prophet (PBUH) said its water is pure and its
    dead are halaal
  • All prohibitions apply to situations in which one
has a choice, if need arises to alleviate hunger
which may cause death, scholars agree that one
should pass one day and one night without food,
then eat as much as necessary to save life.

7
Food Drink - Intoxicants
  • Khamr is Haraam that which causes intoxication
because of it harmful effects on the mind, the
health, the deen, work habits, consequences on
marital and family relationships, neglect of
duties and larger consequences on society at
larger such as road accidents, criminality and
    violence.
  • Not only is wine (khamr) is prohibited, but the
definition of khamr extends to any substance
which intoxicates, in whatever form and under
whatever name. When he was asked about drinks
made from honey, corn and barley, through
fermentation until they became alcoholic, he
(PBUH) replied Every intoxicant is khamr, and
    every khamr is haraam.
  • Whatever intoxicates in large amount or small
amount is haraam. The prophet (PBUH) said If a
bucketful intoxicates, a sip of it is haraam.
  • Drugs of all forms are included in the category
    of intoxicants
  • Commerce in khamr is haraam, cultivating
vineyards for the purpose of selling grapes to
winemakers is haraam He (PBUH) said IF someone
stockpiles grapes during harvest time and hold
them in order to sell them to anyone who
produces khamr, he will be leaping into fire with
    is eyes open.
  • By the same token, acquiring, selling,
circulating, aiding in the distribution of drugs
is haraam, even if you do not consume them
    yourself.

8
Clothing Adornment
  • Cleanliness and Beautification are characteristic
of a Muslim. The Prophet (PBUH) said
  • Clean yourself, for Islam is cleanliness
  • Cleanliness invites towards faith, and faith
leads its possessor to the Garden
  • Gold and pure silk are haraam to Muslim men
  • The Prophet (PBUH) said These two are haram for
    the males of m,y followers
  • Permissibility to women is in consideration for
her feminine nature of love for jewelry and
ornaments. However this should not be used
outside of that which is pleasing to all
  • Observe the rules of dress for a Muslim women
  • Prohibited also
  • Tattooing and undergoing surgery to change your
    God-given look is prohibited
  • items related to luxury living or paganism such
as gold/silver utensils, statues (exemption is
    children toys)
  • Paintings No general ruling exists, each case
judged individually depending on what it depicts
(e.g. painting known to be related to items of
    worship by people)

9
Work Earning
  • Islamic obligation to work and earn a living, the
Prophet (PBUH) said Charity is halaal neither
    for rich nor for able-bodied.
  • It is haraam to beg from others without dire
necessity he who begs without need is like a
person who holds a burning coal in his hands.
  • Work is dignified in Islam, the Prophet (PBUH)
said it is better that a person should take a
rope and bring a bundle of wood on his back to
sell so that Allah may preserve his honor, than
he should beg from people, whether they give to
    him or refuse him
  • A Muslim can earn his livelihood by any work or
trade or industry or via a profession as long as
it does not involve doing, supporting, or
    propagating anything haraam (e.g. farmer
cultivating illicit crops such as hashish).

10
Natural Desires
  • Some of the key issues were discussed in previous
    lesson on Family Life Responsibilities
  • Prohibition of fornication/adultery (zina). Allah
(SWT) says And do not come near zina, indeed,
it is an abomination and an evil way (1732)
  • Islam prohibits all paths that lead to zina,
    accordingly, whatever excites passions, opens
ways for illicit sexual relations between a man
and a woman, promotes indecency and obscenity is
    haraam
  • Paths include looking to the opposite sex with
desire. Allah order Muslim to lower their gaze in
this regard, except in circumstances to carry out
the legitimate needs of daily life.
  • Islam prohibits khulwa, defined as a man and
women (outside of maharim) being alone together
in a place in which there is no fear of intrusion
by anyone else so that an opportunity exists for
    sexual intimacy.
  • The prophet (PBUH) said Whoever believes in
Allah and the Last Day, must never be in privacy
with a woman without there being a mahrem (of
hers) with her, for otherwise Satan will be the
    third person with them.
  • Sexual perversion is haraam and a constitutes a
major sin. Propjet Lut is reported in the Quran
to have told his people who indulged in this
practice What! Of all creatures, do you
approach males and leave the spouses whom your
Lord has created for you? Indeed, you are people
    transgressing (all limits) 26 165-166

11
Social Activities Relations
  • Gambling While permitting a variety of games and
sports, Islam prohibits gambling any game which
    involves betting including
  • Prohibition is tp preserve individual and social
health because of its addiction and devastating
impact on family and social structures,
  • It is no permissible for a Muslim to seek play or
relaxation in gambling, nor is it lawful for him
to acquire money through it. The Prophet (PBUH)
said He who says to his friend, come lets us
gamble, must give a charity. Islam allows only
what is earned through legitimate work and
effort, not the taking of someones else property
via any type of scheme or game
  • Lottery is a form of gambling and is haram.

12
Social Relations
  • Relations in Islam are based on two fundamental
principles (i) awareness of the strong bond of
brotherhood that links the members of society,
and (ii) the protection of the right of the
individual, including the sanctity of his life,
his honor and property as guaranteed by Shari' a.
  • Allah (SWT) says Verily the believers are
brothers, then set matters right between your
brothers and be conscious of Allah in order that
you may obtain mercy. O you who believe, let not
some people mock at other people, for they may be
better than themselves, nor let women mock at
women who may be better than themselves. And do
not slander yourselves, nor revile by offensive
nicknames, evil is the name connoting wickedness
after believing, and whoever does not turn away
(from doing this) those are the wrongdoers. O
you who believe, avoid indulging in much
suspicion, truly, some suspicion is a sin. And do
not spy or backbite on one another, would any of
you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother?
And be conscious of Allah, indeed, Allah is
    Relenting, Merciful.
