BC Monitoring Methodology
  • Two BC sites Vancouver and Victoria.
  • Three risk populations were identified for
    study
  • Club users
  • Adult IDU
  • Street Youth
  • Data collected in two waves
  • 40 participants from each of the IDU and Club
    cohorts were interviewed in early 2007.
  • An additional 50 interviews for each of the three
    pops were conducted between Nov 2007 and March
    2008.
  • These confidential, face-to-face interviews
    lasted between 50-80 minutes.

BC Monitoring Methodology
  • Researchers in each site relied on local
    professional networks to facilitate recruitment.
  • Recruitment sites for the adult IDUs and street
    youth included needle exchanges, youth outreach
    services, community health clinics youth
    community centres.
  • Participants for the club cohort were recruited
    through community postering, newspaper internet
    ads, and club email lists.
  • N458 interviews conducted so far.

Summary Key Findings
  • Very drug involved populations in each site
    high rates of associated harms.
  • Interestingly, highest rates of crystal meth use
    reported in adult IDUs
  • 31 of Adult IDUs reported past week CM use
  • 7.4 clubbers reported past week CM use 4.4 of
    youth populations.
  • Higher rates of past year cocaine injection among
    adult IDUs in Victoria (90) Vancouver (70).
  • Higher rates of past month CM and heroin
    injection among adult IDUs in Van.
  • CM (59 vs. 33 VIC)
  • Heroin (71 vs 63 Vic)

  • Controlling for city, risk group, age, gender,
    survey wave
  • More crack use in 2007/8 v 2006/7
  • More cocaine in Victoria
  • More amphetamine, crystal meth, heroin and
    mushrooms in Vancouver
  • No gender effects, older more likely to use crack
    and crystal meth
  • Greatest range of use among adult IDUs
  • More heroin and ecstasy among Club Drug cohort

Other key findings
  • 23 of clubbers report driving within 1 hour of
    having 2 or more drinks in last year.
  • Average of times this occurred 31
  • Rates were much lower for IDU and Street Youth
    (7 and 10 respectively)
  • Driving within 2 hours of using marijuana was
    reported by 27 of Club users and 22 of Street
    Youth.
