Toddlers to Preschoolers
-Physical growth slows after one -Physical
skills improve dramatically from one to
four toddlers- children who walk
unsteadily preschoolers- three to five year
olds -three year olds walk steadily also jump,
hop, and run

Physical Growth Development from 3-6
Height and Weight -average ½ lb per month
(1-3) -average yearly 21/2 to 3 (4-6) -gain
about 4 to 5 pounds (4-6) -boys often slightly
taller and heavier (4-6)

Proportion and Posture three-spine has
straightened still have baby fat between fourth
and seventh birthday - body becomes straighter
and slimmer - protruding abdomen flattens -
shoulders widen more erect - chest broadens and
flattens - neck becomes longer - legs lengthen
rapidly growing straighter and firmer - balance
and coordination improve- hold arms nearer body

Teeth -all twenty permanent teeth emerge by
early in third year permanent teeth- set of 32
teeth that will not be naturally replaced -
first molars are the first permanent teeth to
come in at about six - primary teeth lost in

dentist for teeth alteration or jaw shape change

skills- involve use and control of the large
muscles of back, legs, shoulders, and arms

control of the finer muscles of the wrists,
fingers, and ankles developmentally appropriate-
tasks are suitable for the child given his or her
age and interests dexterity- skillful use of the
hands and fingers
