Selected Beliefs Among Worship Attenders in the
ELCA
? Seventy-five percent favor teaching creation
along with evolution in the public schools, but
30 percent favor teaching creation instead of
evolution. ? The vast majority (81) believe
that abortion should be legal when a womans life
is in danger, but 85 percent believe that
abortion should be illegal for women who simply
want to end a pregnancy. ? Thirty-two percent of
the respondents said that it is always wrong for
a man and woman to have sexual relations before
marriage. Fifteen percent said it is not wrong
at all. ? Nineteen percent agreed or strongly
agreed that homosexuals should have the right to
marry one another? Twenty-two percent were
unsure and 59 percent disagreed or strongly
disagreed. ? Twenty-eight percent agreed or
strongly agreed that gay partners living in a
committed relationship should be entitled to the
same rights and benefits as couples in
traditional marriages? Twenty-four percent were
unsure and 48 percent disagreed or strongly
disagreed. ? Twenty-three percent said
homosexuals should be allowed to be ordained as
ministers under any circumstances, 10 percent
said only if they are not sexually active, 41
said no and 26 percent said they were not sure.
