16Osteopathic Medical Education in the
pre-Flexnerian period
- Flexner identified 8 osteopathic colleges
Chicago (Littlejohn), Des Moines (Still),
Kirksville, Kansas City (Central), Philadelphia,
Cambridge, and 2 in Los Angeles (Los Angeles and
Pacific). Gevitz notes 10 others. - 1300 students total (Flexner).
- Average annual tuition of 160 (Flexner).
- The eight osteopathic schools fairly reek with
commercialism. Their catalogues are a mass of
hysterical exaggerations, alike of the earning
and curative power of osteopathy. (Flexner) - One-fifth of osteopathic graduates before 1910
were women. (Gevitz) - Standardized instructional period of
approximately 20 months. (Gevitz)
