  • Chapter 12 Lesson 3

Texas
  • At the earliest European settlement, Spain had
    built missions and presidios throughout the land
    of Texas.
  • Moses Austin and his son, Stephen, began
    colonizing southeastern Texas in 1821.
  • Mexican leaders became worried that too many
    settlers were coming to Texas and passed a law
    under General Antonia López de Santan Annas
    leadership that Texas settlers had to obey
    Mexican laws and pay Mexicos taxes.

Texas Revolution
  • Texans attacked the town of San Antonia, angering
    General Santa Anna.
  • Santa Anna ordered the Mexican army to attack the
    Spanish mission, the Alamo.
  • Fighting lasted for 13 days with many American
    heroes, like Davy Crockett, being killed. The
    Texans were defeated.

The Republic of Texas
  • Texans created the Republic of Texas with David
    Burnet as president and Sam Houston as army
    commander.
  • Shouts of remember the Alamo! inspired Texans
    to fight against the Mexicans at San Jacinto and
    capture Santa Anna.
  • Texas was granted independence from Mexico and
    remained its own nation until 1845, when it
    became a state.

Oregon
  • In 1834, missionaries journeyed into Oregon
    Country in hopes to tech Christianity to the
    Indians.
  • They wrote letters back telling of the fertile
    soil and green valleys, spurring other pioneers
    to follow.
  • The journey to Oregon could take six months.
  • In 1846, President Polk signed a treaty with
    Britain to set up a clear boundary on the 49th
    parallel between Oregon and Canada.

Utah
  • Under the leadership of Brigham Young, Mormons
    moved to the Utah territory in the 1840s.
  • Before their move, Mormons disagreed with other
    settlers over their beliefs. An angry crowd
    killed Joseph Smith in 1844.
  • Mormons settle in the Great Basin, the valley of
    the Great Salt Lake
  • Settlers made the harsh land blossom with crops
    and soon the regions population grew.

War with Mexico
  • By 1847, settlers were in the territories of Utah
    and Texas and President Polk believed that all
    the lands west of Texas should belong to the U.S.
  • In 1847, the U.S. invaded Mexico.
  • In 1848, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was
    signed stating that the U.S. would purchase all
    of the western lands.

California
  • As James Marshall was building a waterwheel for
    John Sutters new sawmill, gold was discovered in
    the water.
  • In a years time over 80,000 gold seekers stormed
    into California. They were called forty-niners,
    because they arrived in the year 1840.
  • California filled quickly, and by 1850, it was a
    state.
