CRANKSHAFT

• The crank shaft turns the piston's up and down
  motion into circular motion
• This provides effective torque at the
  crankshaft's end
• The material of the crankshaft depends on the
  load it has to bear

OIL FILM JOURNAL BEARING

• Thin layer of lubricant between parts, preventing
  metal-to-metal contact.
• The type of bearing used depends upon the load
  on the bearing
• low load soft bearing
• high load hard bearing

OPERATION OF THE MECHANISM

• Oil is pumped in to the crankshaft bearing
  through the oil inlet and forms a film around the
  shaft
• This prevents the contact between the crankshaft
  and the bearing case

PROBLEMS WITH THE MECHANISM

• Cavitation Erosion Erosion on the bearing
  surface caused by
• Heat, pressure, chemical attack, abrasion and
  loss of lubrication.
• Misalignment of the crankshaft with in respect to
  the crankcase and the oil film bearing.
