What is Autism?
  • A pervasive developmental disability
    characterized by extreme withdrawal, cognitive
    deficits, language disorders, self-stimulation,
    onset before the age of thirty months.
  • An individual must display 6 or more of 12
    symptoms listed across 3 major areas social
    interaction, communication, and behavior

Statistics/Prevalence
  • 5 to 15 per 10,000 births
  • 4 times more common in boys than girls
  • Occurs among all nations in the world.
  • Occurs across the full range of intelligence
  • although 80 exhibit mental retardation as
    well.
  • All autistic spectrum disorders together
  • occur in about 20 cases per 10,000.
