The History of Recorded Music
  • Edisons Phonograph
  • In 1877 Thomas Edison invented a machine that
could record and playback sound, the machine was
    called a phonograph.
  • It worked by drawing a line onto a waxed barrel
that was based off of the sound waves dictated
    into a stiles.
  • When the cylinder was turned the sound was played
    back.

3
The History of Recorded Music
  • Edisons Phonograph
  • In 1878 he offered ten ways that the phonograph
    could be used
  • Letter writing and all kinds of dictation
  • Phonographic books
  • The teaching of elocution.
  • Reproduction of music.
  • The "Family Record
  • Music-boxes and toys.
  • Clocks that should announce in articulate speech
  • The preservation of languages
  • Educational purposes
  • Connection with the telephone

4
The History of Recorded Music
  • Edisons phonograph
  • In 1890 Edisons company produced the first
    talking doll.
  • Around the same time a coin operated phonograph
was built, it was the first jukebox.

5
The History of Recorded Music
  • Advent of vinyl recording
  • The cylinder recording process took multiple
takes and was often of poor quality.
  • Cylinders stopped being produced in 1929, and
    were replaced by vinyl records.

6
The History of Recorded Music
  • Magnetophon
  • In the early 1900s a German, Oberlin Smith,
thought of a way to make the sound recording
    process easier.
  • The spoken words are transformed by the telephone
into an electrical sound signal and are recorded
in the form of magnetization patterns on the
    sound carrier

7
The History of Recorded Music
  • Magnetophon
  • It was improved in 1930 by Valdemar Poulsen
  • In 1936 the Magnetophon recorded the first live
    symphony, Mozart's no. 39

8
The History of Recorded Music
  • Magnetophon
  • The magnetophon continued to evolve and gradually
    became cassette tapes.
  • These were smaller and could hold multiple tracks
    on one cassette.

9
The History of Recorded Music
  • Compact disc
  • With the advent of computers music was soon
    converted to a compatible format.
  • CDs (Compact Discs) take a digitally recorded
signal and can play it back when read by a laser.
  • This is the first time music can be recorded
    digitally

10
Computers in Music
  • Digital music
  • Because of computers it became possible to
digitize sound and store it on to a storage
device on a computer and play it back.
  • With this came the idea of digital music players
    like iPod, Zune, and others
  • These music players are capable of storing
    thousands of songs on them.

11
  • DIGITAL MUSIC
  • This also allowed the way we record music to
    become easier and more universal.
  • any one can make a digital track with any
    recording software and a microphone.

12
  • COMPUTERS IN MUSIC
  • with the digital storage of music came the
digital organization of music through programs
    like iTunes and others.
  • iTunes also created a digital way to download
music from an online music store. Making sound
    accessible to all
